Abstract: Systems, methods, and programs for detecting and removing defects on a part during laser powder bed fusion manufacturing are described. A sensor may detect defects on the part during manufacturing of the part. A controller may obtain the sensor data and determine the defect and control a short-pulse laser to remove the defect. Furthermore, processes of manufacture and material properties of the part may be evaluated to determine a likelihood of a defect and the short-pulse laser may be operated to reduce the likelihood of the defect. Furthermore, the short-pulse laser may be operated to reduce stress in layers of the part.
