  • Publication number: 20070268197
Abstract: A method for improving the efficiency of antennas having transparent thin-film conductive surfaces, and antennas improved by the method are disclosed. For a selected frequency of antenna operation, values for surface current density in areas distributed over the surface of the thin-film are determined. Regions of the surface containing areas having concentrated current flow are identified based upon the determined values of current density. Antenna efficiency is improved by increasing conductivity in areas of the thin-film surface found to have concentrated current flow. The method enables the improvement of the efficiency of antennas having transparent thin-film conducting surfaces, without unnecessarily obstructing the optical view through the thin-film surfaces of the antennas.

  • Publication number: 20070159395
Abstract: The radiation properties and wave guiding properties of frequency selective surfaces are used in conjunction with closely spaced antenna elements to fabricate antenna structures having adjustable radiation characteristics. The direction, magnitude, and polarization of radiation patterns for such antenna structures can be adjusted by varying the texture or patterning of layers of conducting material forming the frequency selective surfaces. The invention enables the fabrication of low profile antenna structures that can easily be conformed or integrated into complex surfaces without sacrificing antenna performance.

  • Publication number: 20060101794
Abstract: A diesel particulate filter including a microwave-absorbing target housed within a waveguide cavity lined along the walls with a hard-electromagnetic surface (HES). The HES modifies specific electromagnetic boundary conditions for a given design frequency so as to enable the establishment of electromagnetic field patterns which are more uniform across the cavity thereby causing the target material to undergo enhanced uniformity heating. The heating of the microwave absorbing media causes particulate buildup to be vaporized and removed from the filter by the exhaust stream flow.

  • Publication number: 20060102621
Abstract: A method and apparatus for creating uniform heating of an microwave absorptive target. A microwave housing has a longitudinal axis and propagates a waveguide mode at an operating frequency. The target is located in an axial cross-sectional area relative to the longitudinal axis. First layer conductive strips are layered proximal to an inner wall of the microwave housing, substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis and being separated from an adjacent first layer conductive strip by a respective first layer gap, the inner wall acting as a ground plane. Second layer conductive strips are layered proximal to the first layer of conductive strips, parallel to the longitudinal axis and being separated from an adjacent second layer conductive strip by a respective second layer gap. Each first layer gap is centered under a respective second layer conductive strip and each second layer gap is centered over a conductive layer.

  • Publication number: 20050162321
Abstract: A low-profile dual-band antenna includes a ground plane. An ā€œEā€-shaped metal plate is located a first distance from the ground plane and includes first and second outer extensions and an inner extension of the metal plate. A feed tab connects the inner extension and the ground plane. A shorting tab connects the inner extension and the ground plane. The low-profile dual-band antenna communicates first radio frequency (RF) signals in a first RF band and second RF signals in a second RF band. The first RF signals and the second RF signals are vertical polarized signals. The low-profile dual-band antenna produces a radiation pattern that is omnidirectional in the azimuth plane and vertically polarized in a horizontal plane when communicating the first RF signals and the second RF signals. The first RF band and the second RF band can be independently tuned.
