  • Publication number: 20170191445
Abstract: The multi-layer gasket assembly includes a plurality of gasket layers which present a plurality of co-axially aligned openings and have outer peripheries. At least two of the gasket layers are functional layers and have full embossment beads which are spaced from and surround the openings. The functional layers further include half beads with are spaced from the full embossment beads. One or more of the gasket layers presents a redundant seal spaced from the full and half embossment beads of the functional layers and located adjacent the outer peripheries of the one or more gaskets. The redundant seal has a height which is less than a height of the half beads of the functional layers. The redundant seal restricts any fluids that have wicked past the full embossment beads and the half beads from escaping out of the internal combustion engine.

  • Publication number: 20060232016
Abstract: The invention relates to a metal flat gasket, especially cylinder head gasket, for an internal combustion engine. The gasket comprises at least one functional layer having at least one through-opening, and at least one leveling and/or cover layer covering the functional layer at least partially. When the gasket is not yet mounted the functional layer is configured as a planar sheet metal element which is associated, at least in the area of the through-opening, with at least one profiled element. When the gasket is mounted the profiled element deforms the functional layer, thereby producing at least one elastically sealing area.

  • Publication number: 20060119050
Abstract: A multilayer metal gasket, such as a multilayer steel head gasket, for an internal combustion engine has upper and lower functional layers and at least one intermediate layer. At least one of these layers has a circumferential compression control feature in the form of a protrusion or groove which varies in thickness or depth, respectively, around its circumference. The variable thickness of the compression control feature enables uniform sealing pressure on the sealing surfaces of the gasket.

  • Publication number: 20060096362
Abstract: A multilayer metal gasket for an internal combustion engine having an integrated sensor or sensors, such as a pressure sensor. The sensor is located within a combustion cylinder opening in the gasket. Preferably, a sensor is located within each combustion cylinder opening of the gasket. The gasket may also include an integrated sensor signal conditioning module. The gasket is made by a method which includes forming the necessary sensor housings and signal line channels within the spacing layers of the gasket.

  • Publication number: 20050279295
Abstract: A head gasket (48) which acts, when clamped between a cylinder head (28) and a block (22) in a liquid cooled internal combustion engine (20), to form a seal around the combustion chambers (24). A coolant flow path (32) routes through the engine (20) and its directed, in part, through the cylinder head (28) and the block (22), with a corresponding flow opening (54) formed in the head gasket (48) to accommodate flow of liquid coolant in a normal direction. The head gasket (48) includes a one-way valve (58) positioned in the flow opening (54) to allow the flow of coolant in a normal direction but to prevent the flow of liquid coolant through the flow opening (54) in an abnormal, reverse direction. The one-way valve (58) includes movable gate (66) which may be biased against a valve seat (64) in a normally closed condition. The one-way valve (58) can be made as a loose piece article of manufacture which is held in flow opening (54) by self-locking retention clips.

  • Publication number: 20050006857
Abstract: A gasket assembly is formed at least two carrier layers laminated together and formed with at least one opening through the carrier corresponding to openings across a parting plane of two members to be sealed. an elastomeric seal is molded to the carrier to define sealing beads on opposite sides of the carrier adjacent the opening with respective contact surfaces which engage the members to be scaled. The sealing contact surfaces are asymmetrically arranged contact surfaces are asymmetrically arranged relative to one another across the carrier to accommodate associated misalignment of the openings of the members to be sealed across the parting plane.
