  • Patent number: 6400538
Abstract: An energy storage system for use in a magnetic pulse welding and forming apparatus includes a bank of capacitors and a very-low inductance conductive bus system interconnecting the capacitors. The bus system provides the ability to generate a very high frequency, short duration impulse which is needed for welding. The bus system includes first, second and third flat bus panels disposed in closely spaced overlying relation. The second, or middle, bus panel is the “hot” bus and is electrically insulated from the first (lower) and third (upper) bus panels by sheets of electrically insulating material. The first and third bus panels are connected together cooperatively form a ground bus. The bus system overlies the upper ends of the capacitors wherein the second bus panel is electrically interconnected to the respective hot contacts of the capacitors, and further wherein the ground bus is electrically interconnected with the respective ground contacts of the plurality of capacitors.

  • Patent number: 6137094
Abstract: An external inductor for magnetic pulse welding and forming includes an outer steel frame and an inner beryllium-bronze alloy insert which is removably mounted within the frame. The steel frame and the beryllium bronze insert respectively split the responsibility for higher mechanical strength and more concentrated pulse current on the inner surface of inductor's central opening. The improved external inductor design is capable of creating greater impulse forces onto the outer workpiece and has been demonstrated to perform at least 25-30% more deformation than a simple one piece simple steel external inductor for a full metallurgical joint.

  • Patent number: 4990732
Abstract: A discharge device for magnetic-pulse working and welding of metals includes two working electrodes with an igniter electrode in the form of a slotted ring placed therebetween. One of the working electrodes has a current-carrying portion connected to a working portion of the working electrode and is T-shaped, while the second working electrode is separated from the first working electrode and arranged coaxially therewith, and represents a sleeve, one end of which faces the working portion of the electrode and is provided with projections on the outside and inside so as to form a developed working portion of the working electrode.

  • Patent number: 4332997
Abstract: An apparatus for delivering valves and melting rings for internal combustion engines to an inductor heater for hard facing comprises a tubular body which is adjoined by gravity feed trays, for feeding the work valves and rings to be melted respectively. A rotatable pocket is mounted between the tubular body and the tray for feeding the rings. The work valve and the ring to be melted are fed to the tubular body by gravity. Interaction with a stop mounted on the tubular body causes the valve to fall inside the tubular body with its stem being upwardly directed. After rotating, the pocket puts the ring to be melted onto the valve stem. The valve with the ring put thereupon is placed into the inductor for melting.

  • Patent number: 4292486
Abstract: An apparatus for delivery of melting rings and valves to an inductor heater, for hard facing of valves for internal combustion engines by melting rings of heat-resistant alloy upon the working surfaces of valves, comprises gravity feed trays, one for feeding the work valves in a vertical position and the other for feeding work rings laid on their side to a tubular body. Between the exit of the tray for feeding the rings and the tubular body there is installed a horizontal tray which is located under the gravity feed tray for feeding the valves and in the same vertical plane with said tray. The distance between the sliding surfaces of the tray along which the valve head moves and the sliding surfaces of the horizontal tray along which the ring lying on its side moves is less than the length of the valve stem, so that the valve stem enters the hole of the ring and delivers it to the tubular body.

  • Patent number: 4258091
Abstract: A coating is applied to a workpiece by ejecting a powdered material towards the workpiece using the energy of explosion in a recurrent cyclical operation. To produce an explosion, introduced into a combustion chamber of a detonation gun are a powdered coating material suspended in the stream of an inert gas and a gaseous explosive mixture formed by mixing a combustible gas and an oxidizing gas with or without an addition of an inert gas. During the coating process the explosive mixture is formed continuously, and cyclically filling the combustion chamber by portions of the explosive mixture is accomplished by feeding the inert gas to the pipe connecting the mixing chamber to the combustion chamber, which enables regular termination of the stream of explosive mixture and prevents the flame from spreading to the mixing chamber.

  • Patent number: 4214139
Abstract: An apparatus for surfacing valves by fusing in a high-frequency current field refractory alloy rings applied to the seating surfaces of the valves. The apparatus comprises a tubular body provided with chutes adjoining thereto. The chutes are adapted respectively to feed valves and rings to be fused. After a valve and a ring is assembled under the action of gravity inside the tubular body, the valve with the ring to be fused is delivered by a pusher to a mechanism fixing the valve in a heater. The pusher is mounted for reversible movement in the hozizontal plane.

  • Patent number: 4144432
Abstract: Surfacing is realized by fusing refractory alloy rings on the effective areas of valves. The apparatus comprises: a heater, a valve clamping device and a manipulator adapted to receive and to convey a valve with a ring on the stem thereof to the heater zone simultaneously positioning said valve head downwards. The manipulator is operatively connected to a platform on which a feed mechanism adapted to feed the valve to the heater and to the valve clamping device, a sprayer and an unloading chute are mounted. According to the motion of the manipulator the platform alternately positions under the heater the operating mechanisms mounted thereon.
