Abstract: The present invention provides for a method and an apparatus for simultaneous online access of volume-managed data storage. A portion of a storage media to be mirrored is identified. An independent disk-mirror split-off process on the identified portion of the storage media to be mirrored is performed to produce a data mirror that is capable of being independently accessed.

Abstract: A method for decreasing the size of a root partition on a computer system operating under control of a UNIX type operating system without reinstalling the operating system. The computer system includes a first storage device. The first storage device includes the root partition which has a first size. The root partition includes a root file system. The method includes backing up the root file system to a backup file system, booting the computer system to a maintenance mode, deactivating the root partition, activating the root partition at a second size smaller than the first size, and restoring the root file system from the backup file system.

The method includes identifying whether a valid storage areas exists at a location on the first storage device such that the contiguous expansion of the primary swap partition is impeded and preparing the valid storage area, if the valid storage area exists, for allocation as an available storage area to allow contiguous expansion of the primary swap space. The method further includes booting the computer system to a single user mode, increasing the size of the primary swap partition without reinstalling the UNIX type operating system, and rebooting the computer system.
