  • Patent number: 4703731
Abstract: A marine propulsion device comprising a mounting assembly adapted to be mounted on the transom of a boat, and a propulsion unit mounted on the mounting assembly for pivotal movement relative thereto about a generally vertical steering axis, the propulsion unit including a rotatably mounted propeller, and an internal combustion engine drivingly connected to the propeller, the engine comprising an engine block, a timing member mounted on the engine block for movement relative thereto in opposite advance and retarding the spark timing of the engine, a releasable lock for preventing movement of the timing member in the retard direction, and an operator actuatable mechanism for releasing the lock and moving the timing member in the retard direction, and for moving the timing member in the advance direction.
