  • Patent number: 11701856
Abstract: A marine deck member and the process for forming the same are provided. The marine deck member comprises a sandwich-type composite panel made by a compression molding process. In such a process, the panel is made by subjecting a heated stack of layers of material to cold pressing in a mold. The cellular core has a 2-D array of cells, with end faces open to the respective layers or skins. The surface traction of this type of composite panel can be enhanced for marine deck applications by controlled debossing, or embossing, of the first skin while it cools in the compression mold. The debossing effect can be affected by applying pressurized gas, e.g., pressurized air, onto the outer surface of the first skin while in the compression mold. The embossing can be affected by applying vacuum pressure on the outer surface of the first skin while in the compression mold.

  • Publication number: 20220348147
Abstract: A low-profile panel assembly configured to provide sound having at least one acoustic wavelength within a passenger compartment of a vehicle is provided. The vehicle has a support structure. The assembly includes a substrate panel perforated with at least one sub-wavelength hole which extends between front and back surfaces of the panel. The panel is configured to be attached to the support structure. A continuous membrane of facing material overlies and is in contact with the panel. The membrane is tightly stretched over and covers the at least one hole at the front surface of the panel. An electroacoustic sound source is configured to radiate acoustic waves against the back surface of the panel. The radiated acoustic waves travel through the at least one membrane-covered hole to vibrate at least one portion of the membrane which tightly covers the at least one hole. The at least one vibrating portion of the membrane radiates acoustic waves into the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

  • Publication number: 20220186356
Abstract: A method and system for marking a workpiece at a marking location by infusing colorant into targeted surface material within a region of the workpiece via laser-induced chemical etching are disclosed. The system includes a laser subsystem for generating a pulsed laser output and a transport subsystem including a medium containing the colorant mounted immediately adjacent the marking location to transfer the colorant to the targeted surface material upon impact by the pulsed laser output. The system also includes a delivery subsystem for irradiating the medium and the targeted surface material with the pulsed laser output to melt the targeted surface material to obtain molten material and to transfer the colorant from the medium to the molten material. The molten material allows the transferred colorant to thermally diffuse into and chemically bond to the molten material. Each laser pulse creates a microtextured colorized spot of material on the workpiece.
