  • Publication number: 20150078462
Abstract: A method and system for connecting to line protection relays and providing a communications channel between a first end and a second end of high voltage transmission lines for digital Line Current Differential Protection are disclosed. At each of the first end and the second end of the high voltage transmission lines, a Broadband Power Line Carrier (BPLC) gateway device is connected to the line protection relay. The BPLC gateway has a coupling device to physically attach to the line and is configured to transmit and receive data communications over the high voltage transmission lines so as to allow the protection relays to communicate with each other via the existing high voltage transmission lines.

  • Publication number: 20050030898
Abstract: Ethernet, or more generally any packetized network system, remote management techniques are provided, where management instructions and data (“management packets”) are presented during the active idle signal period (e.g., during the inter-packet gap). The management packets are separated from the signalling before normal packet data processing. Thus, remote management is achieved transparently and without using payload bandwidth. Line cards, media converters, and other network devices can employ the management techniques. The management channel enables write and read commands to remote devices on the network, and alarm reporting by a remote device. Also, monitoring of remote device parameters (e.g., temperature, power status), monitoring of remote statistics, remote link testing (loopback), remote adjusting of maximum burst size, and bandwidth provisioning are enabled.

  • Patent number: 6741566
Abstract: An Ethernet, or more generally any packetized network system, remote management device and system operable via Ethernet connections according to non-Ethernet message instructions presented during the active idle signal period, e.g. during the inter-packet gap (IPG), which are separated from the Ethernet signalling before detection. A locally managed device includes a physical layer interface adapted to receive a secondary signal which is encoded to provide a corresponding signal while conforming to the active idle and minimum IPG requirements, and is received by a remote device managed according to the encoded signals provided from the local device during the IPG. Further embodiments provide multiple (serial) nesting of such remote devices along the Ethernet path, with the instructions to and data from the most distant such remote devices forwarded through intermediate remote devices according to the present invention.

  • Patent number: 5115451
Abstract: A local area network modem which meets the stringent signalling requirements of the IEEE 802.4 standard. The modem supports loopback commands by insuring that the receiver and transmitter portions are in phase-synchronism, regardless of the physical distance between the modem and upper layer control circuitry. The transmitter also uses only two digital signal wires to specify which of a number of functions are to be performed by the transmitter analog components. An automatic gain control (AGC) circuit is included which eliminates a number of problems associated with prior designs. In particular, the modem's receiver monitors itself to automatically correct drift in phase and gain control adjustment, without intervention from the upper layer.

  • Patent number: 5099500
Abstract: A symbol detection and correction scheme for local area network modems, especially those which receive one of three symbols at any given time, such as those operating in accordance with the IEEE 802.4 standard. The invention significantly improves the bit error rate observed by the layer above the modem. The modem operates on a received signal with a pair of slicers. One slicer operating as a two-symbol detector, and a second slicer operates as a three-symbol detector. A receiver state machine is used to keep track of which portion of a frame is currently expected to be being received. Depending upon the particular context, one or both of the slicer outputs are used by the state machine to determine which of the three symbols was received. For example, when the receiver is in a state where only one of two data symbols are expected, and no control symbols are expected, only the two-symbol slicer output is used.
