  • Patent number: 8784099
Abstract: The present invention provides multi-layer adhesives and methods that are useful for bonding orthodontic appliances to a tooth structure. The multi-layer adhesives can be precoated on an orthodontic appliance, or alternatively, they can be provided on an adhesive delivery system for transfer to an orthodontic appliance. The multi-layer adhesives and methods preferably provide a useful balance of properties for bonding orthodontic appliances to the tooth structure.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 9, 2008
Date of Patent: July 22, 2014
    Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties Company
Inventors: Joan V. Brennan, David K. Cinader, Jr., James D. Hansen, Darrell S. James
  • Patent number: 7896650
Abstract: Hardenable and hardened dental compositions that include radiation-to-heat converters, and articles including such hardenable and hardened compositions, are provided. Upon irradiating, the hardened compositions increase in temperature, which can be useful for reducing the bond strengths of orthodontic appliances adhered to tooth structures with the hardened compositions.

  • Patent number: 6528555
Abstract: An adhesive suitable for use in the oral environment is provided. The adhesive comprises a filler, hardenable resin, a hardener, and a colorant, the composition has an initial color prior to exposure to actinic radiation and a final color that is different from the initial color subsequent to the composition being exposed to actinic radiation. The adhesive can be precoated on to orthodontic appliances.

  • Patent number: 5971754
Abstract: A method of indirect bonding used in orthodontic treatment includes the steps of placing a first component of an adhesive on base structure of an orthodontic appliance and a second component of the adhesive on portions of a patient's tooth. The appliance is connected to a transfer tray, and the transfer tray is placed over the tooth such that the first component and the second component contact each other and react to provide a bond for securing the appliance to the tooth. The bond has sufficient strength within two minutes and preferably within 1.5 minutes of the time that the first component contacts the second component to enable removal of the tray from the tooth without significantly changing the position of the appliance on the tooth.
