    Abstract: Disclosed are improved modem apparatus and systems for interfacing with a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). The modem includes a broadband data channel. A high-frequency transformer isolates the broadband data channel. An external power source provides one or more power levels for the broadband data channel. A transformerless embodiment using high voltage capacitors for isolation is also disclosed. The invention also provides a hybrid modem having a broadband data channel and a Voice Band (VB) data channel. Isolation is provided alternatively by a high-frequency transformer or high voltage capacitors.
