    Abstract: A downhole well tool having a component with a metal surface to which a sealing material is adhered is disclosed. The sealing material is bonded to the metal surface through the use of an energetic material disposed between the sealing material and the metal surface. Upon activation or initiation of the energetic material, the sealing material becomes bonded to the metal surface. A plastic layer may be disposed between the sealing material and the metal surface to facilitate bonding sealing material to the metal surface. The energetic material is used to bond the plastic layer to the metal surface and may be used to bond the plastic layer to the sealing material.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for filling a defined space, such as an annulus around a production tubular within a wellbore, includes a compliant porous material. The compliant porous material can be compressed and maintained in a compressed state by incorporation of a deployment modifier, which may be a water-soluble or oil-soluble adhesive or biopolymer, used as an impregnant, a coating, or a casing. The production tubular can be positioned at a desired location and the compliant porous material exposed to a deployment modifier neutralizing agent, which then dissolves or otherwise prevents the deployment modifier from continuing to inhibit deployment. Thus, deployment can be delayed to an optimum time by preventing exposure of the deployment modifier to the deployment modifier neutralizing agent. It is emphasized that this abstract is provided to comply with the rules requiring an abstract which will allow a searcher or other reader to quickly ascertain the subject matter of the technical disclosure.

    Abstract: A downhole abrading tools has a body with a first end for connection with a rotating component of a drill string and a cutting end for rotation in unison with the body. The downhole abrading tool also includes a passage through the tool for circulating a drilling fluid. Disposed within the drilling fluid passageway is a taggant injection assembly having one or more taggants disposed therein that facilitates injection of taggants into the drilling fluid upon the cutting end experience excessive wear. The taggants are then transported to the surface location along with the drilling fluid for detection by the operator of the downhole abrading tool.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for verifying positive inflation of an inflatable element include electrical switches or sensors adapted to be actuated when sufficient element to borehole wall contact is achieved. The device may be a micro switch similar to that used in a calculator button, proximity switch or may employ a spear type arrangement wherein a spear is connected to one lead and is isolated from the other lead by insulation and wherein the spear is forced radially inwardly by the radially outwardly expansion of the cover on the element against the borehole wall. Upon piercing the insulation, the spear will have connected first and second leads that such connection being detectable via hard wire to the surface and electrical continuity whereby downhole electronics or intelligence whereby a downhole signal generator using any type of telemetry to communicate uphole.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed which allow isolation of a plurality of zones for treatment, particularly sand fracturing. The lowermost barrier can be pumped through tubing and anchored in cased or open holes. In the preferred embodiment, the pumped plug has a visco-elastic member which contains a particulate aggregate mixture, such as described in U.S. Pat. No. 5,417,285. The visco-elastic material is subjected to a force which changes its shape so that the material obstructs the wellbore. The shape change also accomplishes dehydration of the material within the visco-elastic enclosure by virtue of fluid displacement, resulting from a volume reduction, hardening it so that a plug using the visco-elastic material is formed. Thereafter, a packer on the tubing string is set to isolate the zone for sand fracturing. The process can be repeated without tripping out of the hole as additional plugs are pumped through tubing and the process is repeated.

    Abstract: An external casing packer 10 is provided for positioning downhole along a tubular string in a well. Packer 10 includes a mandrel 12, an elastomeric sealing element 14, and an inflation chamber 26 for inflating the sealing element into sealing engagement with the sidewall of the well. Upper collar 22 and a lower collar 24 positioned axially above and below the sealing element, respectively, and an upper end sleeve 40 and a lower end sleeve 62 of the sealing element are mechanically interconnected. One or more anti-rotational keys 44 rotational interconnect a collar with a respective sleeve. A circumferential groove 52 may be provided in the outer surface of the collar, and a similar circumferential groove 54 provided in the inner surface of the end sleeve. A retaining wire 46 may be passed through a hole 56 in the end sleeve and into the grooves to axially interconnect the collar with the end sleeve.
