  • Patent number: 8450541
Abstract: A method for producing products containing cyclic organic compounds from biomass oil includes adding a biomass oil to a vessel; heating the biomass oil to crack the biomass oil; removing undesired or unreacted materials, heavy ends, and light ends from the cracked biomass oil; and extracting components from the cracked biomass oil to produce a mixture of products containing between 5% and 90% cyclic organic compounds by weight. A method for producing a high-octane aviation fuel with low lead content includes cracking a biomass oil, separating a middle distillate mixture from cracked biomass oil, decarboxylating the middle distillate mixture to produce a mixture of products containing at least about 50% cyclic alkane and alkene compounds by weight, and blending the mixture of products with a fuel having an octane number below 95 to produce an aviation fuel having an octane number of at least 100.

  • Publication number: 20100221166
Abstract: A device and method thereof for the indoor-air purification that utilizes photocatalytic oxidation and ultraviolet lights in a fluidized bed to remove pollutants. The fluidized bed contains ultraviolet lights that are immersed within the bed for direct access to ultraviolet-irradiation. Fluidization aids such as vibration and static mixers may be employed to allow for better circulation of the catalyst bed to increase reaction rates. Photocatalytic oxidation within the device uses photocatalyst particles that were designed to be more active, fluidize better and have ten-fold higher attrition-resistant qualities than current industry standards. The device provides for the most efficient use of and longevity of ultraviolet light which reduces operating costs.

  • Patent number: 7618603
Abstract: A method for oxidizing elemental mercury contained in flue gas uses a catalytic barrier filter. The method comprises directing the flue gas towards the catalytic barrier filter; passing the flue gas through the catalytic barrier filter in the presence of an oxidant; and outletting the flue gas from the catalytic barrier filter, wherein about 50 percent to about 99 percent of the elemental mercury is oxidized.

  • Patent number: 5464573
Abstract: A compact heat or mass transfer exchange column containing a plurality of vertically spaced-apart sections to define a column space therebetween and at least one integral collector-distributor device in the open space for the collection and distribution in the column of a downwardly flowing liquid. The device comprises a plurality of lateral collection and distribution troughs extending from the central channel or sump to distribute downwardly flowing liquid to a lower section. The lateral trough contains a plurality of removably secured, angled vane elements connected to the upper edges of the lateral troughs, the vanes extending over the open space between the lateral troughs to receive downwardly flowing liquid on the upper surfaces thereof and to direct the downwardly flowing liquid into the lateral troughs, and optionally a wall wiper ring to direct liquid from the internal walls of the column into the collector-distributor device.
