    Abstract: A communication system and method are disclosed for improving network efficiency through localized cell switching at access nodes. Data flows generated by source nodes are segmented into fixed-length cell frames by access nodes comprising an Instinctively Wise Integrated Circuit (IWIC) and an Atto-Second Multiplexer (ASM). The ASM assigns the cell frames to orbital time slots, and routing and scheduling logic implemented by the IWICs, ASMs, and a distributed switching fabric routes the cell frames through a hierarchical switching structure including one or more nucleus switches. Routing decisions are based on destination identifiers and routing control information contained in headers of the cell frames. By performing cell-level switching proximate to data sources and bypassing higher-level switching resources when appropriate, the disclosed system reduces buffering, congestion, and switching load while maintaining deterministic cell-frame transmission behavior within the network.

    Abstract: A communication system and method improve network efficiency through distributed cell switching using orbital time-slot multiplexing. Data flows are segmented into fixed-length cell frames by access nodes comprising an Instinctively Wise Integrated Circuit (IWIC) and an Atto-Second Multiplexer (ASM). The ASM assigns the cell frames to orbital time slots within an orbital time-division frame to deterministically space cell-frame transmissions. The time-slotted cell frames are routed through a hierarchical switching fabric including one or more nucleus switches. Switching and scheduling operations are distributed among the access nodes to reduce buffering, limit contention, and decrease switching load at higher-level switching nodes. Routing may be performed using a cell frame fast packet protocol based on hierarchical address fields contained in the cell frames, thereby reducing latency and congestion while maintaining deterministic transmission behavior across the network.
