Patent number: 8328444Abstract: An apparatus and method for presenting a substrate/print media having favorable surface conditions and optimum spatial orientation for printing purposes. The apparatus/method includes a mechanism for maintaining the substrate/print media in a substantially orthogonal spatial orientation relative to the direction of ink deposition, and a pressurization device for developing a pressure differential across a face surface of the substrate/print media such that positive pressure is applied to a surface opposing the face surface. The pressurization device provides a cushion of air to support the substrate/print media during ink deposition. The apparatus/method may further include a system for transporting the substrate/print media beneath or across a print head assembly for in-line printing on a mailpiece.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 2005Date of Patent: December 11, 2012Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: Darryl T. Patent number: 8190518Abstract: A method and system for performing monetary transactions across multiple source accounts. The method includes the steps of: determining whether a multi-source transaction is desired or required to complete a monetary transaction; selecting the specific source accounts to be accessed and debited to perform the monetary transaction; determining the amount of funds to be withdrawn from each of the source accounts; and communicating with the source accounts to (i) access the funds and (ii) determine whether adequate funds exist in each of the source accounts to perform the monetary transaction. When summed, the funds accessed from the multi-source accounts equal the total required to perform the monetary transaction. The final steps for completing the monetary transaction include approving the monetary transaction and transferring funds from the multiple source accounts to a single destination account.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 2006Date of Patent: May 29, 2012Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: Darryl T. Rathbun, Alexandra Mack

Patent number: 7549955Abstract: In a printer system where a print head is used to print on a flat material moving on a surface along a moving direction, a first creasing surface and a second creasing surface disposed on different sides of the flat material are used to make a crease on the flat material. The first creasing surface is mounted on a housing and the second creasing surface is disposed along the length of a track substantially perpendicular to the moving direction. The first and second creasing surfaces are substantially complementary to each other such that when these creasing surfaces are moved closer to each other, they cause the flat material to bend. A movement mechanism is then used to move the housing along the track so that the bending of the flat material forms a crease from one side of the flat material to the opposing side.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 2004Date of Patent: June 23, 2009Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: Darryl T. Rathbun, Thomas J. Foth

Publication number: 20090157470Abstract: A method of facilitating the maintenance of an address list of each of a plurality of mailers wherein master address information based on current address list information received from each of the mailers is maintained, and wherein the mailers are automatically notified of address changes based on change of address information for a plurality of movers provided. Also, a method of facilitating the maintenance of an address list of each of a plurality of mailers in response to a change of address request being provided to a postal service by a mover that specifies a new address for the mover. Finally, a method of assisting a party to notify selected payees of one or more changes in contact related information for the party that is provided in conjunction with an electronic bill payment system through which a party makes payments to the payees.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 13, 2007Publication date: June 18, 2009Applicant: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: Darryl T. Patent number: 7440148Abstract: The present invention relates to turning and recording and/or reproducing multiple pages or leaves from a material, such as a book or periodical. A leaf lifting mechanism lifts the leaves of the material (e.g., book, periodical, etc.) from which the images are to be obtained. The leaf lifting mechanism can turn the leaves of the material itself, or also work cooperatively with an image recordation mechanism to turn the leaves of the material. During recordation, the image recordation mechanism follows the curvature of the leaf being recorded to minimize image distortion or degradation. The recorded images may be reproduced by a reproduction device such as a photocopier or printer.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2002Date of Patent: October 21, 2008Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: Denis J. Patent number: 6773388Abstract: The present invention is directed generally to a folder apparatus for sheets, and more particularly a folder with a fold path transverse to a feed path. In an embodiment, the folder comprises a channel for receiving a sheet, feed rollers for feeding the sheet along the feed path and through the channel, the feed rollers are axially aligned with the feed path, guide rollers positioned transverse to the feed path for feeding the sheet along a fold path to pinch rollers which pinch the sheet to form folds. The paper path does not reverse and the folding action is smooth so that noise and vibration are reduced. Also, the folder has a smaller footprint than other folders.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 2002Date of Patent: August 10, 2004Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventor: Darryl T. Rathbun
