  • Patent number: 11378036
Abstract: Systems are provided for cooling a cylinder block via bore bridge cooling passages. In one example, a cylinder block with a bore bridge positioned between a first cylinder and a second cylinder, the cylinder block also including a coolant jacket at least partially surrounding the first cylinder and the second cylinder, has at least one cooling passage positioned within the bore bridge. An inlet of the at least one cooling passage has a larger area than an outlet of the at least one cooling passage and at least a portion of the at least one cooling passage has a non-cylindrical geometry formed by a lost core.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 1, 2020
Date of Patent: July 5, 2022
    Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLC
Inventors: Justin Craft, Phil Cierpial, Mathew Hintzen, Antony Schepak, Daryl Self, Baran Celikten, Paul Shoemaker

  • Patent number: 11131267
Abstract: Systems are provided for cooling a cylinder block via bore bridge cooling passages. In one example, a system may include a cylinder block with a first cylinder and a second cylinder adjacent to the first cylinder and a bore bridge positioned between the first cylinder and the second cylinder, the cylinder block further including a coolant jacket at least partially surrounding the first cylinder and the second cylinder. The system may further include a cooling passage positioned within the bore bridge, the cooling passage including an inlet fluidly coupled to the coolant jacket and an outlet positioned at a deck face of the cylinder block, the cooling passage curving from the inlet to the outlet with a curvature greater than zero.

  • Patent number: 8327817
Abstract: A bearing for an automotive engine includes a base having a first bearing segment formed therein, and a bearing cap removably mounted to the base, with the bearing cap including fastener towers in contact with the base. A second bearing segment extends between the fastener towers. A number of non-contact stiffening ribs extend parallel to the fastener towers. The stiffening ribs are attached to outboard portions of the fastener towers. The stiffening ribs cause the bearing cap to avoid excessive flexing and distortion, while at the same time avoiding fretting corrosion which would occur were the clamp loads of the cap to the base be reduced by materially increasing the size of the fastener towers.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 19, 2009
Date of Patent: December 11, 2012

  • Patent number: 7373912
Abstract: An oil level indicating system for an internal combustion engine includes an indicator passageway extending through a cylinder block, cylinder head and up through a ported boss extending through an upper engine cover. The ported boss is sealingly engaged with the cylinder head of the engine so as to prevent fugitive oil from entering indicator passageway, thereby preventing erroneous oil level readings.

  • Publication number: 20070283918
Abstract: A combination bearing beam and crankshaft-interactive oil management device for an internal combustion engine includes longitudinally and laterally extending beam elements attached to the engine's main bearing caps. Baffle members extend between the beam elements and include not only scraper elements for capturing oil adhering to the engine's rotating assembly, but also windows for allowing captured oil to flow into the engine's oil sump.
