  • Publication number: 20030098107
Abstract: This invention comprises a new process for developing high regression rate propellants for application to hybrid rockets and solid fuel ramjets. The process involves the use of a criterion to identify propellants which form an unstable liquid layer on the melting surface of the propellant. Entrainment of droplets from the unstable liquid-gas interface can substantially increase propellant mass transfer leading to much higher surface regression rates over those that can be achieved with conventional hybrid propellants. The main reason is that entrainment is not limited by heat transfer to the propellant from the combustion zone. The process has been used to identify a new class of non-cryogenic hybrid fuels whose regression rate characteristics can be tailored for a given mission. The fuel can be used as the basis for a simpler hybrid rocket design with reduced cost, reduced complexity and increased performance.

  • Patent number: 5297176
Abstract: The guide pin aligning a top nozzle of a nuclear fuel assembly to an upper core plate of a nuclear reactor, is replaced working exclusively from below the upper core plate. The replacement guide pin has a shaft portion engaged with the upper core plate and the clamping nut which held the original guide pin, by threadable connection and/or by an expansion fitting. A shoulder on the pin bears against a lower surface of the upper core plate, and a nose of the pin is received in the top nozzle of the fuel assembly. A preferred expansion fitting has a bushing with ridges on its outer surface and a conical inside surface, and is inserted into the bored out original guide pin shaft. A threaded conical plug is pulled axially with rotation of the replacement pin shaft to expand the bushing. The ridges rigidly lock the replacement pin between the shoulder and the clamping nut.

  • Patent number: 4659539
Abstract: To preclude failure of components of control-rod assemblies or of unprotected control rods (WDRC's) a calandria is provided above the upper internals. The calandria includes hollow tubes through which the drive rods for the various control rods pass and which protect the drive rods. The guides for the control rods are closed except at the top so that the coolant flows vertically through the guides into the calandria. In the calandria, the coolant flows transversely to the hollow tubes and out through the outlet nozzle. The tubes have a mass and stiffness and strength such that they resist failure by reason of the transverse flow of the coolant to which they are subjected.
