Publication number: 20230250693Abstract: An apparatus and method are used in conjunction with a system for performing horizontal directional drilling, the system including a drill string extending from a drill rig to a boring tool such that the boring tool is steerable based on a roll orientation. The system also includes an arrangement for generating steering commands for guiding the boring tool to a target position. Responsive at least in part to the steering commands, a display is configured to selectively indicate each of a rotate command, a push command and a spin command. A steering indicator is described which indicates a current roll orientation of the boring tool. A 3-D grid can be animated and centered on either a steering or target indicator. Rounding of a steering command ratio can limit the display of target roll orientations to only those that a given boring tool transmitter is capable of sensing and indicating.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 13, 2023Publication date: August 10, 2023Inventors: Bruce Kolpack, David Bahr, Thomas J. Hall, Benjamin J. Medeiros

Publication number: 20220107167Abstract: A planning tool plans movement of a boring tool for an underground drilling operation. The planning tool includes one or more wheels for rolling on a surface of the ground along a path responsive to movement by an operator to characterize the surface contour and to generate guidance for the boring tool to reach a target position. Surface roughness is measured based on instantaneous rate of change of an accelerometer output. Accelerometer cross axis sensitivity compensation provides for more accurate surface contour characterization for paths that are not smooth. Accuracy of rolling datasets is predicted and associated indications are presented based on surface roughness in combination with speed. A rumble/speed gauge guides operator movement based on detected surface roughness in combination with speed.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 22, 2021Publication date: April 7, 2022Inventors: Rudolf Zeller, Richard McKibbon, David Bahr, Johan Anders Fredrik Mantere, Sigurdur Finnsson

Publication number: 20200396959Abstract: An automatic living food dispenser is provided as a top lid with air circulation holes, a rotatable carousel with cavities and nutrient compartments for storing and maintaining living food, a main compartment housing the carousel with a food release hole, a base unit for supporting the main compartment, a rotary mechanism to rotate the carousel relative to the base unit, and a control unit to control the function of a timer that indicates food release times. The control unit is configured to deliver signals to the motor to actuate a dispensing mechanism in response to settings preset by a user. At food release times, the rotary mechanism rotates the carousel and consequently pushes stored living food in the main compartment in a circular manner such that the living food may gravitationally drop through the food release hole to an external environment for the caged pet to consume.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 24, 2019Publication date: December 24, 2020Applicant: Verge Exotic Pet Products, LLCInventor: Nicholas David Bahr

Patent number: 8282899Abstract: Solvent absorption processes for separating components of an impure feed gas are disclosed. The processes involve two stages of gas-liquid contacting, namely a first, absorption stage and a second, stripping stage. In the case of a carbon dioxide (CO2)-containing methane gas as an impure feed gas, contacting, in the stripping stage, the solvent effluent from the absorption stage with a recycled vapor fraction of the solvent effluent from the stripping stage can improve the recovery and purity of not only the methane (and/or other light hydrocarbons in the impure feed gas), but also that of the CO2 contaminant gas.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 2011Date of Patent: October 9, 2012Assignee: UOP LLCInventors: David A. Bahr, Lamar A. Davis

Patent number: 7235914Abstract: Various micro-transducers incorporating piezoelectric materials for converting energy in one form to useful energy in another form are disclosed. In one embodiment, a piezoelectric micro-transducer can be operated either as a micro-heat engine, converting thermal energy into electrical energy, or as a micro-heat pump, consuming electrical energy to transfer thermal energy from a low-temperature heat source to a high-temperature heat sink. In another embodiment, a piezoelectric micro-transducer is used to convert the kinetic energy of an oscillating or vibrating body on which the micro-transducer is placed into useful electrical energy. A piezoelectric micro-transducer also is used to extract work from a pressurized stream of fluid. Also disclosed are a micro-internal combustion engine and a micro-heat engine based on the Rankine cycle in which a single fluid serves as a working fluid and a fuel.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2001Date of Patent: June 26, 2007Assignee: Washington State University Research FoundationInventors: Robert F. Publication number: 20060066434Abstract: The present disclosure concerns embodiments of a thermal switch used to control the transfer of heat from a heat source to a heat sink. According to one aspect, the thermal switch can be activated, or turned “on”, so as to establish a path of low thermal resistance between the heat source and the heat sink to facilitate the transfer of heat therebetween. The thermal switch can also be de-activated, or turned “off”, so as to establish a path of high thermal resistance between the heat source and the heat sink to minimize or totally prevent the transfer of heat between the heat source and heat sink. In certain embodiments, the thermal switch includes at least drop of a thermally conductive liquid that thermally couples the heat source to the heat sink whenever the switch is activated.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 18, 2003Publication date: March 30, 2006Applicant: Washington State University Research FoundationInventors: Robert Richards, David Bahr, Cecilia Richards
