    Abstract: In one embodiment, a system for determining maximum available engine output torque includes an engine speed sensor and a control computer produce a fueling command for fueling an internal combustion engine. The computer is configured to produce a maximum available engine output torque value as a function of the engine speed signal and the fueling command. In an alternate embodiment, the system includes a control computer configured to produce the maximum available engine output torque value as a function of engine speed, at least one engine intake parameter associated an intake manifold coupled to the engine, and an engine exhaust parameter associated with an exhaust gas structure coupled to the engine. In either case, an application control strategy is responsive to the maximum available engine torque value to control an engine-driven accessory as a function thereof.

    Abstract: An engine control system for optimizing a tradeoff between turbocharger lag and production of exhaust emissions including altitude and intake manifold air temperature compensation includes a turbocharger boost sensor, an engine speed sensor, an ambient pressure sensor and an intake manifold air temperature sensor, each providing appropriate sensor signals to a control computer. The control computer is operable to limit fueling signals supplied to the engine fuel system based on turbocharger boost, engine speed, ambient pressure and intake manifold air temperature to thereby optimize a tradeoff between turbocharger lag and production of black smoke and other exhaust emissions while compensating for changes in altitude and intake manifold air temperature.

    Abstract: A piston for reciprocal movement within a combustion chamber (4) of a compression ignition engine (2) having a fuel injector (20) for forming a fuel injection plume (40) having a relatively deep angle (7.degree. to 40.degree. from a plane perpendicular to the central axis of the combustion chamber) and a piston (8) having a centrally located symmetrical upwardly opening cavity for forming a combustion bowl (30) especially arranged to complement the plume in a manner to maintain very low entrainment of soot in the lubrication oil of the engine and to maintain other engine emissions, e.g., CO and smoke, within acceptable ranges suitable to meet TALuft standards. In particular, the combustion bowl (30) as formed by an upwardly opening cavity formed as a surface of revolution having a centrally raised floor section (42) with relatively large radius of curvature R.sup.1 and an upwardly flared outer bowl section 48 having relatively smaller radius of curvatures R.sub.2.     Abstract: A system for controlling fuel flow in an internal combustion engine receives a command specifying a desired fuel flow rate from an electronic control module. The system generates a feedforward estimate of actuator current required to produce the desired flow rate. This estimate is combined with a fueling current offset value generated using a proportional-integral feedback controller. A differential pressure between the fuel rail and cylinder gas is converted, by surface interpolation based on a lookup table, to an estimate of actual fuel flow rate. The difference between this actual fuel flow rate and the desired flow rate is provided to the feedback controller as an error signal. The feedback controller preferably uses different gain values depending on an operating mode of the engine (speed control and torque control modes).

    Abstract: A unit fuel injector is disclosed to be used in a fuel injection system of an internal combustion engine wherein each unit injector is operated independently from one another and in synchronization with the internal combustion engine. Specifically, the unit injector in accordance with the present invention includes a reciprocating plunger assembly within the unit injector that controls fuel metering as well as fuel injection, and a valve device positioned between a minor diameter plunger section and a cup of the unit injector so as to permit fuel flow in one direction for fuel injection and to restrict flow of gases in the opposite direction. The valve device effectively reduces carbon build-up on the injector surfaces and increases injector longevity while reducing maintenance. Moreover, fuel metering is accurately controlled without substantial carboning flow losses.
