  • Patent number: 8616342
Abstract: A vehicle brake monitor assembly for an air disk brake includes a brake actuator having a pushrod projecting from inside a chamber of said brake actuator. The pushrod releasably actuates a lever arm of a caliper thereby moving the disk brake into a braking position when the pushrod is in an extended position and releasing the disk brake from the braking position when the pushrod is in a retracted position. The pushrod includes a pushrod shaft and a contact member biased in a telescoping relationship relative to the pushrod shaft and the lever arm of the caliper abuts the contact member counteracting the bias of the contact member. A sensor is integrated with the assembly proximate the contact member and detects movement of the pushrod relative to the lever arm and to the pushrod shaft.

  • Patent number: 8319623
Abstract: A brake monitoring system and method for a vehicle having multiple axles and a plurality of brake actuators and an engine control module, each brake actuator being associated with one of the axle. The system include sensors for measuring, in real-time, brake pressure and brake lining wear, and generating first and second signals. The first and second signals are received and stored in a chassis communications module. The chassis communications module detects fault condition of the brakes as a function of the first and/or second signals and for recording the fault condition, the fault condition being one of a brake monitor warning and a brake lining warning and provides an indication of status via warning lights.

  • Patent number: 8098040
Abstract: A system and method to convert the ram air energy resulting from the movement of an electric vehicle through the air mass into electric energy to recharge the energy storage devices of the vehicle while minimizing the apparatus caused drag effect on the vehicle, thereby extending the driving range of the vehicle between external charging. At least one ram air driven turbine is positioned within the vehicle, the turbine driving a mechanically coupled generator to charge the battery. Ram air is ducted in the front of the vehicle to cause the turbine generator to rotate and output electrical energy to charge the battery. The effect of variation in vehicle speed on both turbine generator output and turbine caused drag is optimized by adjusting the pitch angle of the turbine blades.

  • Publication number: 20070041011
Abstract: Photons emitted from a sample responsive to being excited by laser pulses are directed through a prism onto a photomultiplier tube having several spaced-apart anodes. The prism alters the path of each photon as a function of its wavelength so that the wavelength determines the anode to which the photon is directed. Taps of first and second delay lines that are coupled to respective alternating anodes. When an anode receives the photon, it generates a pulse that propagates through the delay line in opposite directions from its associated tap. A timer determines first and second times from the laser pulse to the pulse reaching the first and second ends of the delay line. The difference between the first and second times corresponds to the wavelength of the emitted photon and the sum of the first and second times corresponds to the emission delay of the emitted photon.

  • Publication number: 20060263925
Abstract: A system includes a particle counter having a data output, an Ethernet cable adapted for connecting the data output of the particle counter to a monitoring station, and a power over Ethernet (POE) type power supply structured for providing power to the particle counter via the Ethernet cable. Apparatus includes a particle counter having an air movement device powered solely by a POE supply. Apparatus may include a particle counter having an air mover, power management subsystem, and Ethernet data output, the power management subsystem for monitoring power consumption of the air mover and maintaining the power consumption below a predetermined amount, and an electrical supply for powering the particle counter via an Ethernet medium. A method includes powering a particle counter over Ethernet medium via a POE power supply, detecting microscopic particles, and producing digital data based on the detecting, and transmitting the data over the Ethernet medium.

  • Patent number: 6612094
Abstract: Article wrapping apparatus for wrapping or folding a wrapper blank around an article which may comprise or contain a group of rod-like articles such as cigarettes, includes a wrapper blank former which simultaneously folds sides and ends of a blank (60) by plunging the former (64) around an article holder (58) and subsequently plunging the article from the holder into the former. The apparatus also includes a housing (24) for supporting a partially-wrapped article which is pivoted relative to an abutment (32) so that a flap is swept into a closed position; and pivoted holders (24, 54) which are used to transfer articles between axially-spaced process positions on a process drum (6). Folding operations may be performed during transfer to or from a pivotable holder (24, 54), particularly in a radial direction of the drum (6).

  • Patent number: 6480857
Abstract: A relational database is provided with a plurality of data entries stored in the database. The data entries have a hierarchical relationship. The data entries are assigned an item identifier that uniquely identifies each of the data items. A multiple digit outline number is assigned to each of the data entries wherein the digits of the outline number correspond to the hierarchical levels of the data entries. A hierarchical level identifier is assigned to each of the data entries wherein the hierarchical level identifier equal the number of non-zero digits in the outline number. An organizational table is created wherein the table includes a row for each of the data entries and the table includes multiple columns. The columns comprise a column for the item identifier, a plurality of outline number columns where each outline number column comprises one digit of the outline number such that each of the digits is stored in a separate column, and a hierarchical level column comprising the level identifier.

  • Patent number: 5737519
Abstract: Apparatus and method for the early detection of faults in a head-disc assembly (HDA) from a disc drive manufacturing process. Parametrics are obtained from an HDA at a parametric station and provided to a pattern recognition system for estimating an error rate category from the measured HDA parametrics. The estimated error rate category and the parametrics are provided to a fuzzy inferencing system, which uses linguistic rules to classify the HDA as GOOD, MARGINAL or BAD, based upon the parametrics and the estimated error rate category. HDAs classified as GOOD or MARGINAL continue processing through dynamic burn-in (DBI), while HDAs classified as BAD are subjected to rework. The pattern recognition system includes a reference database containing historical parametric and associated error rate data, which is updated over time by the subsequent inclusion of selected parametrics and measured error rates for HDAs subjected to DBI.
