    Abstract: A device in a voice over packet (VOP) network includes a transceiver operable to transmit and receive session initiation protocol (SIP) communications over at least a portion of a VOP network. Also included is a processor cooperatively operable with the transceiver. The processor is configured to facilitate, responsive to receipt of an invite request, determining if the invite request is a diagnostic invite. If the invite request is a diagnostic invite, then the audible alert and display of caller id are suppressed. The processor is configured to generate a final response to establish two-way media flow and a dialog. After the dialog is established, diagnostics is launched on the device, and responsive to receipt of diagnostic information requests and after two-way media flow is established, the device responds with diagnostic information responses.

    Abstract: A system and method are provided for improving the throughput of wireless networks, such as IEEE 802.11 networks. Individual devices in the network determine the level of activity on the network. In the event that the network is active, the devices increase throughput by skipping the pending packet transmission and appending its data payload to a future packet transmission. By encoding multiple payloads in a single packet transmission, packet overhead is reduced and MAC layer delays are eliminated. The data payloads are subsequently split back into individual packets for transmission over the wired portion of the network.

    Abstract: The invention teaches elimination of the need for allocating a telephony port or equivalent processor resource for realtime facsimile transmission through a broadband access gateway by replacing a fax modem or analog fax machine with a computer system having a network connection to the gateway. A software application on the computer uses a serial port redirector that provides a virtual communication port for facsimile software applications that would otherwise use a fax modem on a computer. The port redirector captures fax data sent to a serial communication port on the computer and sends it to the virtual fax module on the gateway. The gateway has a virtual fax software application associated which emulates a Class 1 or Class 2 fax modem interface from the client-side PC.
