  • Publication number: 20080289431
Abstract: A combined pressure and temperature sensor comprising a tubular member 3 of circular cross section having a closed end and an open end, the open end, in use, connecting to a pressurised environment such that the interior of the tubular member is exposed to the pressure, a flat or preferably a symmetrical distribution of flats 1 being formed on the outer cylindrical surface of the tubular member 3, and a sensor element 2 mounted on at least one said flat 1, which sensor element 2 is sensitive to the strains in the tubular wall of the tubular member 3 resulting the pressure in the interior thereof and the temperature of said tubular member.

  • Patent number: 7222541
Abstract: A device for measuring torsional distortion of a body comprises first and second clip portions each having a central part and two legs depending from the central part, each leg having adjacent the free end thereof a groove or projection for engaging a respective projection or groove (14) provided in the body (16) to mount the clip portion the body rotationally fastened therewith. A bridge interconnects the clip portion. The bridge is less stiff than the clip portions whereby relative rotational displacement of the clip portions caused by torsional distortion of the body will cause proportional deflection of the bridge. Means, for example a SAW device (15), are provided for measuring the deflection of the bridge to provide an indication of the torsional distortion which produces the deflection of the bridge. Also (20) for the interior all of a hollow body.

  • Patent number: 7151337
Abstract: A pressure monitor has a base and a lid secured to the base to define a substantially fluid tight chamber. At least part of the lid is flexible and forms a diaphragm which deflects responsive to changes in fluid pressure surrounding the monitor. A projection provided on the diaphragm transmits movement thereof to a distortable substrate located within the chamber. A first SAW device is mounted on the distortable substrate, and at least a second and third SAW device are mounted within the chamber. The second SAW device carried on a reference substrate section has its direction of propagation inclined at an angle to the direction of propagation of at least one of the first and third SAW devices. This way movement of the diaphragm induced by a change in pressure in the zone surrounding the monitor results in distortion of the distortable substrate, which is measurable by the SAW device mounted thereon, without distorting said reference substrate section.

  • Patent number: 6508132
Abstract: A load cell for use in dynamic testing apparatus for mechanically testing samples includes an accelerometer mounted in the load cell on the same axis as the line of action of the mechanical force applied to the specimen under test. The resultant signal from the combination of the normal output from the load cell and the output from the accelerometer compensates for errors introduced by the mass of the moving grip used to grip the specimen in the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 6227123
Abstract: A wayside electrical pick-up shoe for operating the discharge, or the like, of a railcar includes a spring biased electrical contact pivotally attached to a base plate with a mechanism for electrically insulating the base plate from the electrical contact. The mechanism for electrically insulating the contact may include insulating material forming at least part of the pivot between the contact and the base plate. The mechanism for electrically insulating the contact may further include insulating material supplied on a spring member which biases the contact.

  • Patent number: 6148735
Abstract: A light weight gondola car having side walls constructed of a plurality of upper and lower sheets with a longitudinal stiffener being formed from lower portions of the upper and lower sheets. A bolster transition stake joins the side sheet, top chord, bolster web, and side sill for increased strength. The load from the truck assemblies is transmitted to the car body through load carriers. Diagonal truss members strengthened the end panels. The body frame is connected to the center sill with a reinforcement plate. The center sill and draft sills are interconnected by a tie plate.

  • Patent number: 4396385
Abstract: Metering apparatus for controlling the flow of fluid through a fluid infusion system at an operator-designated rate includes a single-use cassette having a syringe-type pump in the flow system. The cassette is removably mounted on actuator apparatus which drives the syringe plunger through alternate fill and pump modes to advance fluid through the system. To provide compensation for the lack of flow in the system during fill strokes, the plunger is advanced at a higher compensation rate for first and second portions of the pump stroke immediately preceding and immediately following each fill stroke, with the pump stroke advancing at the designated rate therebetween. This results in an average flow rate which corresponds to the designated rate. By making the first and second compensations of equal duration, the effect of the fill cycles on the regularity of the average flow rate is minimized.

  • Patent number: 4298938
Abstract: The backup control circuit is used with a main control circuit for a kidney dialysis machine and is operable upon failure of the main control circuit to operate with a predetermined time period to cause closing of a dialysate operate valve and opening of a dialysate bypass valve and/or stopping of a blood pump when an aberrant condition in the dialysate conductivity, temperature, flow or negative pressure are sensed and/or when an aberrant condition of the arterial or venous blood pressure is sensed and/or excessive leakage of blood into the dialysate is sensed. The backup control circuit includes control circuitry for controlling operation of the back-up control circuit, the circuitry having input contacts coupled to sensor inputs to the main control circuit. A time delay circuit has an input coupled to the control circuitry and is operable to initiate a timing cycle for the predetermined time period upon receiving an error signal from the control circuitry.

  • Patent number: 4254460
Abstract: A controller is disclosed for controlling the operation of selected electro-mechanical devices without the use of a microprocessor or similar computing machines. The controller includes a memory programmed to output a data word each time the memory is advanced to its next successive memory address. Responsive to the data word, an electro-mechanical device, identified by the data word, is actuated to perform its function. As the function of an electro-mechanical device is completed, a sensor develops a control signal for altering the internal count of a counter. The counter, in turn, advances the memory to its next address for outputting its next data word. The cycle continues as the memory is advanced through its addresses and selected electro-mechanical devices are successively actuated to perform their assigned functions.

  • Patent number: 4227814
Abstract: The optical detector is particularly adapted for use with an apparatus for separating blood into its components and is of the type including a centrifuge for centrifuging whole blood to separate same into the components thereof and of the type wherein plasma is withdrawn from the centrifuge through a flexible, light transmitting tubing and the spillover of red blood cells into the plasma withdrawn is monitored by the optical detector. The optical detector comprises a block having a slot across the top face thereof, the inner portion of the slot having a width less than the outer diameter of the tubing which is received in the slot such that when the tubing is pressed into the slot, it is squeezed from a circular cross section to an oval cross section to present two flat portions of the tubing adjacent opposite sidewalls of the slot. A first cavity is situated in the block behing a first sidewall of the slot and a second cavity is situated in the block behind a second sidewall of the slot.
