  • Patent number: 8369549
Abstract: A hearing aid includes a microphone to convert sounds into electrical signals and a memory to store a plurality of voice prints and a plurality of sound-shaping instructions. Each of the plurality of sound-shaping instructions is associated with one of the plurality of voice prints. The hearing aid further includes a processor coupled to the microphone and the memory. The processor is configured to compare at least one sample from the electrical signals to the plurality of voice prints to identify a voice print. The processor selects sound-shaping instructions associated with the voice print and applies the sound-shaping instructions to selectively shape a portion of the electrical signals corresponding to the voice print to produce a shaped signal. The hearing aid further includes a speaker coupled to the processor and configured to reproduce the shaped signal as an audible output.

  • Publication number: 20130021352
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing display image refresh in bursts to a display device. A buffered refresh controller includes capabilities to drive the display based on video signals generated from a local frame buffer at a first rate. The graphics controller may optimally be configured to burst a new frame of pixel data to the buffered refresh controller at a second rate to replace the previous frame of pixel data in the local frame buffer. The second rate is different than the first rate. Additionally, the graphics controller may send frames only when they contain new pixel data. By enabling the graphics controller to selectively transmit the new frame of pixel data at the second rate, higher than the first rate, the graphics controller may be placed in a power-saving state during at least a portion of each frame update.

  • Patent number: 8356258
Abstract: Computer-readable media, computerized methods, and user interfaces (UIs) for manipulating display areas on a GUI workspace by transitioning the display areas from an original state to one of a set of enhanced window states are provided. Initially, an indication to resize a display area is received at an operating system, which consequently invokes an appropriate window state. The indication may include capturing an edge of the display area and vertically dragging the edge to a dock-target region, thereby invoking a vertically-maximized state. Accordingly, configuration settings of the vertically-maximized state are applied such that the display area is stretched to approximately the screen height. In another instance, the indication may include capturing the display area and dragging a display area into a dock-target region, thereby invoking a semi-maximized state.

  • Publication number: 20130007180
Abstract: The embodiments described herein generally relate to a protocol for implementing data operations, e.g., a version of SMB, atop RDMA transports. In embodiments, systems and methods use the protocol definition, which specifies new messages for negotiating an RDMA connection and for transferring SMB2 data using the negotiated communication. A new protocol message may include new header information to determine message size, number of messages, and other information for sending the SMB2 data over RDMA. The header information is used to accommodate differences in message size requirements between RDMA and SMB2. The SMB Direct protocol allows SMB2 data to be fragmented into multiple individual RDMA messages that a receiver may then logically concatenate into a single SMB2 request or SMB2 response. The SMB Direct protocol also may allow SMB2 to transfer application data via efficient RDMA direct placement and to signal the application data's availability when the transfer is complete.

  • Patent number: 8345991
Abstract: A technique for selecting portions of a multi-resolution medical image data set to be stored and the portions of the multi-resolution medical image data set to be discarded in order to reduce the overall amount of image data that is stored for each image data set. The selection is based on the clinical purpose for obtaining the medical image data. The clinical purpose for obtaining the medical image is used to select a segmentation algorithm to segment the image data into several regions based on their relevance to the purpose for obtaining the image data. A mask is created from the segmented data. The mask is used to assign data compression quality factors to corresponding regions in the image data. The image data in each region is compressed based on their assigned quality factor. The image data that is highly relevant is compressed with lossless data compression. The image data in regions of lesser relevance are compressed with lossy data compression.

  • Publication number: 20120329360
Abstract: A mechanism allowing the control of multiple orbiting bodies comprising: a bearing surface (306) which may or may not be integral to a handle (300); a rotatable section (308) free to move through 360 degrees upon the bearing; and, attached to the rotatable section, an array of two or more pendulums (314, 316) which are first whirled in coplanar orbits and subsequently, via changes made to the attitude of the axis of the rotatable section, in precessing, non-coplanar, non-chaotic orbits equaling the pendulums in number. The pendulums may be identical or have differing properties of length, weight, or aerodynamics affecting their relative tendencies to precess and may be decorated and incorporate elements which emit light and/or sound. In certain applications some or all of these characteristics of length, weight, and aerodynamics, as well as the visual and auditory components are customizable.

  • Publication number: 20120317742
Abstract: An apparatus for removing particulate-carrying air from a moving web. The moving web has a first side and a second side. The apparatus includes a NACA duct positioned in a non-contacting relationship on a first side of the moving web, and at least partially submerged in a particulate-carrying boundary layer of the moving web. The NACA duct can have an intake opening and an exhaust opening such that when the intake opening is submerged in the boundary layer at least a portion of the particulate-carrying air from the boundary layer enters the intake opening and exits the exhaust opening, thereby scavenging particulate-carrying air from said boundary layer.

  • Publication number: 20120317607
Abstract: A technique is disclosed for dynamically reconfiguring a digital video link based on previously determined link training parameters. Reusing the previously determined link training parameters enables a no link training (NLT) protocol for quickly configuring the digital video link without the need for repeating a link training process. A display device advertises NLT capabilities information to a GPU indicating it can retain link charactristics for one or more link configurations. The GPU uses the NLT capabilities information to determine whether the display device is able to quickly transition to a specific link configuration using the NLT protocol, or to switch between configurations. The NLT capability allows a link to be advantageously quiesced and restored quickly while the GPU is transitioning in and out of power-saving sleep states, or placing the link in a more power efficient configuration, or higher-bandwidth higher-performance configuration.
