  • Publication number: 20240301198
Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin compositions, methods of making, and uses thereof. In an embodiment, a method of forming a UF resin composition is provided. The method includes heating a first mixture comprising formaldehyde and a first amount of urea, introducing a bio-additive with the first mixture to from a second mixture, and heating the second mixture at a selected temperature while maintaining the second mixture at a selected pH. The method further includes introducing a second amount of urea to the second mixture to form a third mixture, and heating the third mixture to form a first product mixture comprising a UF resin composition. In another embodiment, a UF resin composition is provided. The UF resin composition includes a liquid UF resin and a bio-additive. The UF resin composition can optionally include a rheology- and/or strength-enhancing polymer, a methylated melamine-formaldehyde crosslinker, or both.

  • Patent number: 9550894
Abstract: Polyester materials, methods for making polyesters materials, and uses of the polyester materials in binder materials and articles of manufacture are disclosed. In one embodiment, a process is provided for preparing a polyester solution, including mixing monomers of at least one organic acid containing at least three carboxylic groups and at least one multi-hydroxyl alcohol containing at least three hydroxyl groups to form a reaction mixture, heating the reaction mixture to a first temperature, polymerizing the monomers at the first temperature until reaching an acid value from about 200 to about 400 mg KOH/g, adjusting the temperature to a second temperature less than the first temperature, and forming the polyester solution. The polyester materials may be mixed with cross-linking materials to form binder materials. The binder material may then be used to form articles of manufacture.

  • Patent number: 9499672
Abstract: The mechanical properties of urea formaldehyde resins may be improved by incorporating therein polyvinyl alcohol. The polyvinyl alcohol may be incorporated during pre-mixing, mid mixing, and/or post mixing of the resin components. Resins prepared using polyvinyl alcohol are particularly desirable in articles requiring improved mechanical strength and water resistance, as compared to similar resins prepared without the polyvinyl alcohol such as shingles.
