  • Publication number: 20060118472
Abstract: Presteralized manifolds are provided which are designed for sterile packaging and single-use approaches. Disposable tubing and flexible-wall containers are assembled via aseptic connectors. These manifolds interact with valves and pumping equipment which can be operated by a controller which provides automated and accurate delivery of biotechnology fluid. The manifold also being used in conjunction with one or more conductivity sensors used to measure the conductivity of the biotechnology fluid. Such sensors interact with the controller or are connected to a separate user interface. The combination of disposable tubing, flexible-wall containers, aseptic connectors, manifold, controller, and conductivity sensors provides an aseptic environment while avoiding or reducing cleaning and quality assurance procedures.

  • Patent number: 6792637
Abstract: An apparatus dispenses detergent into a warewasher from a reservoir wherein a flow control device controls the flow of the detergent. A sensor measures the electrical conductivity of water within the warewasher and produces a conductivity measurement. A controller operates the flow control device in a first mode in which the quantity of detergent dispensed into the warewasher is determined in response to the electrical conductivity of the water. If the conductivity measurement is determined to be unreliable, the controller operates in a second mode in which a predefined quantity of detergent is dispensed into the warewasher. The reliability of the conductivity measurement is determined based on the amount that the conductivity changes upon detergent being added to the warewasher.

  • Patent number: 5983710
Abstract: A modular chromatography column heating and temperature control system includes a heater base module with a compartment for the chromatography column that includes a heater plate. A set of heater blocks is provided in pairs, each heater block having opposite main faces in which are formed channels that match chromatography columns of different diameters. The heater blocks are mounted in pairs on the heater plate with the chromatography column held between them in matching channels on the two adjacent main faces of the heater blocks. An appropriate number of pairs of heater blocks are mounted to the heater plate so that the pairs of heater blocks cover as much of the length of the chromatography column as desired. The set of available pairs of heater blocks may include heater blocks of different lengths, so that appropriate selections of pairs of heater blocks can be made to best match the length of the chromatography column.

  • Patent number: 5386833
Abstract: An apparatus periodically measures the carbon dioxide content of the breath of a medical patient. The need to recalibrate the apparatus is determined by comparing the carbon dioxide measurements taken at different times during the respiratory cycle to corresponding reference levels. These levels often occur when the apparatus no longer is measuring accurately. When recalibration is indicated the apparatus waits until the patient begins inhaling so that the recalibration does not interfere with measuring the carbon dioxide during exhalation. The apparatus then measures the carbon dioxide content of the ambient air to define an offset value used in patient monitoring.

  • Patent number: 5196169
Abstract: The free fatty acid content of an edible oil is measured by a system including a supply of a carrier solution containing an organic solvent for dissolving the oil and a color indicating reagent and an oil sample supply connected to a flow-through colorimetric detector via a sample injection valve. The sample injection valve is movable between a load position wherein a sample stream of the oil is routed to a sample waste collector via a sample loop and a stream of the carrier solution passes through the detector via a carrier solution conduit and a measure position wherein a slug of the oil in the sample loop is introduced into the carrier solution conduit and mixed with the carrier solution prior to passing through the detector. The free fatty acid in the oil reacts with the color indicating reagent in the carrier solution to produce a color of an intensity indicative of the free fatty acid content which is measured by the detector.

  • Patent number: 5139956
Abstract: The peroxide content of a non-aqueous medium is measured by a system including separate supplies for two carrier solutions, a first one containing an acid for acidifying the sample and the second containing an iodide compound for reacting with the peroxide(s) in the sample and producing a free iodine ion, such as I.sub.3.sup.-, and a flow-through detector, such as a colorimetric device. The sample and first carrier solution streams are controlled by a sample injection valve which is movable between a load position wherein the sample stream is routed to a sample waste collector via a sample loop and the first carrier solution stream passes through a first carrier solution conduit and is combined with a stream the second carrier solution prior to passing through the detector and a measure position wherein a slug of the sample is introduced into the first carrier solution conduit, mixed with the first carrier solution and combined with the second carrier solution prior to passing through the detector.
