Patent number: 11237890Abstract: An aspect includes receiving a drive log page including data from a plurality of disk devices, in which the drive log page includes a plurality of attribute fields including a reassignment field that tracks data movement from a failing sector of a disk device to a new sector of the disk device. Performing, by the system, a failure prediction based on attribute data of the drive log page to identify one or more disk devices of the plurality of disk devices that are predicted to fail. Disabling, by the system, the one or more disk devices in response to the failure prediction.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 2019Date of Patent: February 1, 2022Assignee: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: David Verburg, Timothy O'Callaghan, M. Dean Sciacca

Patent number: 11113163Abstract: A system determines that a given drive in an array is due for replacement. The system ranks available replacement drives based on their predicted rates of failure. The system replaces the given drive with a replacement drive that has the lowest predicted rate of failure.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 2019Date of Patent: September 7, 2021Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Feng Gao, David Verburg, Richard P. Oubre, Jr., Brian Robert Bailey

Publication number: 20210245739Abstract: A method for performing an action based on risk assessment includes identifying a subject vehicle in a vicinity of a traveling vehicle, wherein the vicinity is based on a direction of travel and a distance between the subject vehicle and the traveling vehicle. The method receives a plurality of observations from a device on the traveling vehicle, where the plurality of observations includes at least one vehicle observation that identifies a feature on the subject vehicle that affects operational safety of the subject vehicle and the traveling vehicle. The method generates an updated risk assessment score for the subject vehicle based on the one or more observations and an initial risk assessment score for the subject vehicle. The method, responsive to determining an action for the traveling vehicle to perform based on the updated risk assessment score for the subject vehicle, performs the action at the traveling vehicle.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 11, 2020Publication date: August 12, 2021Inventors: David Verburg, Eric V. Kline, Sarbajit K. Rakshit

Patent number: 10832393Abstract: A method, computer program product, and a system where a processor(s) obtains data comprising trends recognized by an observer of the system over time; data comprised of more than one vintage. The processor(s) transforms the data measurable dimensions and assigns the transformed data to vintages and to distinct periods of time. The processor(s) generates an image from the transformed data that represents the trends, organized by the distinct periods of times and the vintages.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 2019Date of Patent: November 10, 2020Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Steven Hurley, David Verburg, Lu Liu, Ai K Ang, Sia Kai Julian Tan

Patent number: 8495256Abstract: A method and computer program product for sending a data request from a host bus adapter logic processor to a hard disk drive, setting a standard time out period for receiving a reply from the hard disk drive, sensing vibration in the hard disk drive, sending a vibration alert signal from the hard disk drive to the host bus adapter logic processor in response to the sensed vibration exceeding a predetermined amount of vibration, and, in response to receiving the vibration alert signal from the hard disk drive, the host bus adapter logic processor establishing an extended time out period for receiving the reply. The rotational vibration sensor used by the hard disk drive for repositioning the read/write head may also be used to sense the vibration and form the basis for the vibration alert signal, such as a vibration error code. By extending the time out period during high vibration events, the hard disk drive can ride out the event without being tagged as having failed.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 2011Date of Patent: July 23, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Eric T. Gamble, Kenton C. Green, Carl E. Jones, Timothy J M Louie, Robert D. Peavler, David A. Verburg
