  • Patent number: 7252866
Abstract: A foam thermoplastic container e.g. cup, bowl molded from expandable thermoplastic particles e.g. expandable polystyrene, has a film made of a thermoplastic resin e.g. solid polystyrene, rubber-modified polystyrene, PET, polyethylene, polypropylene, fused to its inner sidewall surface by heat and pressure to create a barrier to resist the leakage of liquid and food with oil and/or fatty components and to increase the rim strength of the container. The thermoplastic resin film can be fused to the outer surface of the container for printing purposes and/or to create a barrier and/or can be fused to the base surfaces of the container. The molding machine used to form the foam container is used to fuse the film to the container.

  • Publication number: 20020117769
Abstract: Foamed cellular particles made from an expandable polymer composition are formed at the plant of the polymer producer and shipped to the foam molder for making foam articles. The foamed cellular particles have a bulk density between 34.3 pounds per cubic foot (550 kilograms per cubic meter) and 12.5 pounds per cubic foot (200 kilograms per cubic meter) and a blowing agent e.g. pentane less than 6.0 wt %, i.e. ranging in an amount of 2.0 and 5.0 wt %, i.e between 2.5 and 3.5 wt %. These particles have an established cell structure and a fixed number of cells. The average cell size ranges between 5 and 100 microns. The foamed cellular particles are shipped to the foam molder a) in packages with a material strength that is less than the packages used for shipping expandable polymer particles and b) at a total shipment weight that is equal to the total shipment weight of the expandable particles.
