  • Publication number: 20230413395
Abstract: A rotating magnet heater for metal products, such as aluminum strip, can include permanent magnet rotors arranged above and below a moving metal strip to induce moving or time varying magnetic fields through the metal strip. The changing magnetic fields can create currents (e.g., eddy currents) within the metal strip, thus heating the metal strip. A magnetic rotor set can include a pair of matched magnetic rotors on opposite sides of a metal strip that rotate at the same speed. Each magnetic rotor of a set can be positioned equidistance from the metal strip to avoid pulling the metal strip away from the passline. A downstream magnetic rotor set can be used in close proximity to an upstream magnetic rotor set to offset tension induced by the upstream magnetic rotor set.

  • Patent number: 11821066
Abstract: Systems and methods of non-contact tensioning of a metal strip during metal processing include passing the metal strip adjacent a magnetic rotor. The magnetic rotor is spaced apart from the metal strip by a first distance. The systems and methods also include tensioning the metal strip through the magnetic rotor by rotating the magnetic rotor. Rotating the magnetic rotor induces a magnetic field into the metal strip such that the metal strip is tensioned in an upstream direction or a downstream direction. In other aspects, rotating the magnetic rotor induces a magnetic field into the metal strip such that a force normal to a surface of the metal strip is applied to the metal strip.

  • Publication number: 20230211401
Abstract: Systems and methods are described for roll-forming metal substrates. The metal substrates are subjected to induction heating during the roll-forming process by exposure to time-varying magnetic fields, such as by exposure to a rotating permanent magnet, or exposure to laser radiation from a laser source. Heating of the metal substrates allows improved formability or plasticity of the substrate in order to reduce or eliminate damage to the substrate during roll-forming to low bending radius to thickness ratios. Heating of the high-strength metal substrates can also function to temper the substrates and/or improve surface corrosion resistance and form high-strength end products with desirable properties.

  • Publication number: 20220349038
Abstract: A rapid quenching line can be suitable for use with hot coil at, or above the metal strip's recrystallization point. Hot coil can be uncoiled by a low tension uncoiler using a non-contacting hold-down device. The metal strip coming off the hot coil is rapidly quenched (e.g., at rates of at or above 100° C./s or 200° C./s) through multiple quenching zones. Coolant can be removed, such as with an air knife and/or a wiper (e.g., an ultra-compliant wiper). Steam can be collected from earlier quenching zones and be repurposed to provide humid air to the metal strip, such as at regions where the temperature of the metal strip is at or below the Leidenfrost point. The cooled metal strip can pass through a bridle to increase the tension in the metal strip before the metal strip is optionally lubricated and then recoiled or otherwise further processed.

  • Patent number: 10875067
Abstract: Systems and methods for using full-width hot sprays to pre-heat rolling mills prior to processing of metal sheet or plate are described herein. The hot sprays may be individually controlled. Using hot sprays can allow the rolling mill to reach operating temperature and achieve a desired thermal crown so that metal sheet or plate may be processed immediately within tolerances for flatness and gauge accuracy. Pre-heating of rolling mills can eliminate the need of the rolling mill to operate in a transitional period of work roll heating and can increase efficiency by eliminating or reducing scrap material and mill downtime. Hot sprays may also be incorporated with existing coolant systems to provide thermal control systems for rolling mills with bi-directional temperature controls.

  • Patent number: 10844467
Abstract: A compact heat treatment line can include a short heating zone capable of rapidly bringing a metal strip to a suitable solutionizing temperature through the use of magnetic rotors, such as permanent magnet magnetic rotors. A fast and efficient soaking zone can be achieved as well, such as through the use of magnetic rotors to levitate the metal strip within a gas-filled chamber. Magnetic rotors can further levitate the metal strip through a quenching zone, and can optionally reheat the metal strip prior to final coiling. Magnetic rotors used to heat and/or levitate the metal strip can also provide tension control, can facilitate initial threading of the metal strip, and can cure coatings and/or promote uniformity of coatings/lubricants applied to the metal strip without overheating. Such a heat treatment line can provide continuous annealing and solution heat treating in a much more compacted space than traditional processing lines.
