    Abstract: A manual marine winch comprising a winch housing, rotating drum assembly supported on the housing, and a manually actuated control for spooling and un-spooling a winch line on the drum, wherein the control includes a self-releasing handle for selectively tensioning the drum. handle includes i) a ratchet gear coupled to the drum ii) a rotating handle body with a manual end grip, iii) a user engaged trigger mechanism moveable between an engaged and release position, and iv) a handle locking pawl on the body coupled to the trigger mechanism and moveable between a position engaged with the gear rotationally securing the body to the gear and drum when the trigger is in the engaged position and a position disengaged with the gear rotationally separating the body from the gear and drum when the trigger is not in the engaged position.

The method of tensioning the winch line includes feeding a lead in end of the winch line through the drum, manually pulling the lead in end through the rotating drum removing slack, and rotating the drum.

    Abstract: A manual winch includes a housing supporting a rotatable reel, a ratchet assembly coupled to the reel movable between an engaged and disengaged position, and a load releasing system for moving the ratchet assembly system to a disengaged position. The ratchet assembly includes a rotatable ratchet gear which is adapted to be engaged by a pivotable locking pawl. The locking pawl is pivotable into and out of engagement with the ratchet gear for moving the ratchet assembly between the engaged and disengaged position. The locking pawl is mounted on a movable base which secures the locking pawl to the housing. The load releasing system includes a linear actuator for moving the relative position of the base relative to the ratchet gear and the housing, and a separate brake for holding the reel and ratchet gear in position under a load.

    Abstract: A manual swivel winch is pivotally attached to a D-ring of a barge deck, boat deck or the like. The manual swivel winch includes a pair of spaced side plates defining a substantially open bottom, a drum rotatably supported between the side plates, and a rotatable handle attached to the drum and extending from one of the side plates. A swivel link is attached to the side plates for pivotally attaching the winch to the D-ring. Each side plate may include a pair of spaced feet extending down at a lower edge thereof with a recess extending between the pair of feet. The recess combined with the open bottom provides a self-cleaning action to the manual swivel winch.
