Patent number: 11794938Abstract: A reinforced plastic container having improved rim planarity. The container has a non-round main body portion integral with a finish portion. The main body portion has a central longitudinal axis and defines a hollow interior of the container. The finish portion has an upper surface defining a rim with a circumference framing a round opening that provides access to the hollow interior of the container, a radially outwardly extending snap bead being adapted to receive and retain a closure and hermetically seal the container and including interrupted portions located around the circumference of the rim, and a plurality of reinforcements located in the interrupted portions of the snap bead and assuring substantial planarity of the upper surface of the rim even when substantial forces act on the container. Each reinforcement has a strut bounded by and centered between a pair of strut indents, with each indent supported by a buttress.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 2021Date of Patent: October 24, 2023Assignee: GRAHAM PACKAGING COMPANY, L.P.Inventors: Sheldon E. Yourist, Michael J. Kelly, David B. Heisner

Patent number: 11117701Abstract: A container including a body having a base defining a closed end, a finish defining an opposite open end, and a sidewall between the base and finish. The base includes a support surface defining a reference plane and a contoured base recess extending inwardly from the support surface to a maximum base recess height “hbrmax” from the plane. The sidewall includes a concave rib extending circumferentially around the body. A center of the rib is disposed at a rib height “hr” from the plane. The ratio “hbrmax:hr” is between 1:3 and 1:5. The rib includes a radiused transition surface extending from the base to an angled inner surface and having a radius of curvature “r1” of at least 0.10 inches. The angled inner surface has an angle “a” relative to the plane of between 28 and 80 degrees. A method and mold assembly for making the container are also provided.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2018Date of Patent: September 14, 2021Assignee: GRAHAM PACKAGING COMPANY, L.P.Inventors: David B. Heisner, Edward J. Roubal, III

Publication number: 20190389616Abstract: Container including a body having a compartment defined therein, the body including a base portion defining a closed end, a finish portion defining an open end opposite the base portion, and a sidewall between the base portion and the finish portion. The base portion includes a support surface defining a reference plane and a contoured base recess extending inwardly from the support surface to a maximum base recess height “hbrmax” from the reference plane. The sidewall includes a concave rib extending circumferentially around the body, wherein a center of the concave rib in side cross-section is disposed at a rib height “hr” from the reference plane, wherein the ratio of the maximum base recess height to the rib height “hbrmax:hr” is between 1:3 and 1:5. The concave rib in side cross-section includes a radiused transition surface extending from the base portion to an angled inner surface, the radiused transition surface has a radius of curvature “r1” of at least 0.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 20, 2018Publication date: December 26, 2019Applicant: GRAHAM PACKAGING COMPANY, L.P.Inventors: David B. Patent number: 10273033Abstract: An asymmetric pressurized plastic container includes a bottom, a shoulder portion and a finish portion that is unitary with an upper end of the shoulder portion. A generally cylindrical bumper portion having a first longitudinal axis is provided at a lower end of the shoulder portion. A generally cylindrical main body portion having a second longitudinal axis is positioned beneath the bumper portion and has at least a first sidewall feature defined therein. The first and second longitudinal axes are offset so as to compensate for any lateral deflection of the container that may occur as a result of pressurization acting upon the first sidewall feature. In addition, the main body portion may include a second sidewall feature to provide additional compensation against lateral deflection of the container causes a result of pressurization acting upon the first sidewall feature.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2012Date of Patent: April 30, 2019Assignee: GRAHAM PACKAGING COMPANY, L.P.Inventors: David B. Heisner, Sheldon E. Yourist, J. Andrew Osgood, David P. Piccioli

Patent number: 8985362Abstract: A plastic container includes a shoulder portion having an annular rib defined therein and a generally cylindrical main body portion having a longitudinal axis. At least one gripping recess is defined in the main body portion that has an oblong shape when viewed in front elevation and that is defined in part by a curved concave inner surface when viewed in side elevation. The gripping recess includes a plurality of horizontal indentations, each of which is sized to receive a finger of a consumer when the plastic container is being gripped by the consumer.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 2014Date of Patent: March 24, 2015Assignee: Graham Packaging Company, L.P.Inventors: David B. Heisner, Stephen R. Guerin
