Patent number: 6742490Abstract: An apparatus for and method of mounting a flange to an oil pickup tube uses a bracketed flange mounting (201, 203, and 205). The bracketed flange mounting includes a flange (203) with a flange extension (205) in connection with a bracket (201) that is mounted to an oil pickup tube (101) between its two ends. The bracketed flange mounting (201, 203, and 205) may couple to an engine crank case or oil pump inlet in the same way as prior assemblies without a bracketed flange mounting, thus no retooling of any other part of the engine is required.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2002Date of Patent: June 1, 2004Assignee: International Engine Intellectual Property Company, LLCInventor: David B. Patent number: 6718935Abstract: There is provided a hydraulic fuel system having an integrated and internally mounted oil circuit for providing high pressure in a hydraulically operated electronically controlled fuel injector fuel system. There is provide an internally mounted high pressure pump in a pump housing in the crankcase and connected to internally routed high pressure lines that deliver the oil to high pressure oil rails. There is provide an integrated low pressure oil reservoir in the crank case that comprises a low pressure oil cooler and reservoir. The oil cooler is preferably immersed inside the low pressure oil reservoir to optimize available engine space and improve heat transfer. There is also provided a high pressure pump filter that covers a high pressure pump inlet feed passage to prevent debris from passing into the high pressure oil pump and other components on the high pressure oil circuit.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 2001Date of Patent: April 13, 2004Assignee: International Engine Intellectual Property Company, LLCInventors: David B. Meisner, Griselda Collet-Santacruz, Ruben D. Varela

Patent number: 6374803Abstract: The present invention describes a filter screen for removing debris from the hydraulic actuating fluid in an internal combustion engine having a hydraulic pump for supplying hydraulic actuating fluid to hydraulically-actuated unit fuel injectors. An upper portion of a priming reservoir is mounted on a front cover of the engine. The front cover forms a lower reservoir portion. A screen assembly is positioned adjacent to an interface defining an entrance from the upper reservoir portion to the lower reservoir portion. The screen assembly includes a filter screen enclosing the entrance to force the actuating fluid to pass through the filter screen, thus retaining debris that exceed the mesh size of the filter screen.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 2000Date of Patent: April 23, 2002Assignee: Navistar International Transportation Corp.Inventors: Thomas B. Warmoth, Manuel Gamboa, Edgardo Y. Estacio, David B. Meisner

Patent number: 6098597Abstract: The present invention describes a filter gasket (50) for removing debris from the hydraulic fluid in an internal combustion engine (10). An upper reservoir structure (30) is mounted on a front cover (14) of the engine (10) at interface (46). The front cover forms a lower reservoir (16). The upper reservoir structure (30) forms an upper reservoir (35). A gasket (42) is disposed along the interface (46) to seal the upper reservoir structure (30) to the front cover (14). A screen assembly (70) is positioned adjacent to the interface (46). The screen assembly (70) includes a filter screen (76) connected to a plate member (56). The plate member (56) operatively engages the gasket (42). The plate member (56) forces hydraulic fluid to pass through the filter screen (76), thus retaining debris that exceed the mesh size of the filter screen (76).Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 1999Date of Patent: August 8, 2000Assignee: Navistar International Transportation CorpInventors: Thomas B. Patent number: 5190444Abstract: A tandem fuel pump assembly for internal combustion engines includes a housing having a fixed spring retainer mounted thereinside which supports a diaphragm pump biassing spring thereabove to force a diaphragm defining the movable lower wall of a first pumping chamber to reduce the volume thereof and eject fuel from an outlet thereof preferably through a fuel filter to the inlet of a second piston pumping chamber. A second biassing spring supported below the spring retainer forces a pumping piston downwardly to reduce the volume of the second pumping chamber and thereby eject fuel therefrom to an engine fuel rail for injection into the engine therefrom.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 1991Date of Patent: March 2, 1993Assignee: Navistar International Transportation Corp.Inventors: James J. Grinsteiner, David B. Meisner
