Patent number: 7014160Abstract: A washing machine base that protects and cushions the washing machine and secures the washing machine transmission or other mechanism suspended below the washer tub during assembly and shipping, even if the appliance is tilted. The base may be formed entirely from corrugated board and comprises a load bearing tray and an insert disposed within the tray. The tray has a bottom panel for supporting the washing machine and side panels connected to and extending upward from the bottom panel. The insert is formed from a corrugated blank that, when folded in accordion fashion, assumes a substantially pyramid shape defining a centrally disposed opening raised above the bottom panel and configured to receive and secure the washing machine mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 2004Date of Patent: March 21, 2006Assignee: Sonoco Development, Inc.Inventor: David B. Patent number: 6367626Abstract: A Clearview packaging assembly for containing an irregular shaped appliance such as a washer or dryer is provided. The assembly comprises a clamshell-like framework placed around the appliance and wrapped tightly in transparent film. The framework includes a hinged top cap, front corner posts glued to the front portion of the top cap, rear corner posts glued to the rear portion of the top cap, front and rear bottom pieces glued to the lower ends of the corner posts, and a basiloid piece glued to the two rear corner posts. The top cap and the basiloid piece cooperate to form a three-layer thick basiloid handling flange to facilitate basiloid lifting of the packaging assembly with the appliance contained therein. The top cap has triangular shaped side walls that, along with the front corner posts, maintain the structural integrity of the package and prevent trapezoiding during basiloid handling.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2000Date of Patent: April 9, 2002Assignee: Sonoco Development, Inc.Inventor: David B. Patent number: 6264157Abstract: A base pad for supporting an appliance during assembly and shipping is provided. The pad has a pair of endpieces, each having portions for supporting the weight of an appliance, a pair of crosspieces connected to the endpieces to form a substantially rectangular base, and wrapping substantially covering the weight supporting portions of the endpieces. In addition to providing strength, the wrapping may also help hold the crosspieces and endpieces together. The endpieces are formed of a low density material, such as expanded polystyrene and the wrapping is formed of a medium to high density material such as kraft paper. The combination of the crosspieces formed of a low density material and the medium to high density wrapping material provides an optimum combination of strength and cushioning.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2000Date of Patent: July 24, 2001Assignee: Sonoco Development, Inc.Inventor: David B. Muyskens

Patent number: 6247596Abstract: A corner post for protecting and cushioning large products such as appliances that compresses to a stronger shape than its original shape when the corner post and product are wrapped in clear plastic film. The corner post comprises beads formed along the vertical lengths of the inner and outer walls. When wrapped in plastic film, the beads lock together to form a stable structure that resists further compression while exerting an outward force on the plastic film to insure that the plastic film stays tight during shipping and storage.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 2000Date of Patent: June 19, 2001Assignee: Sonoco Development, Inc.Inventor: David B. Patent number: 4811840Abstract: A pair of cardboard blanks are each folded and glued to provide opposite sides of an appliance shipping container, each side including a pair of vertical corner posts integrally formed from folded portions of its associated blank. The two sides are fastened at their bottom ends to opposite edges of a rectangular base element supporting an appliance. Flaps at the tops of the two sides are folded to overlap each other, and are glued together to constitute the top of the container. One of the flaps includes an integrally formed handling flange to facilitate lifting and moving of the container. A transparent plastic film is stretch wrapped about the sides to complete the container, the resultant container having four generally transparent sides to allow a substantially full view of the appliance contained therein.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 1988Date of Patent: March 14, 1989Assignee: White Consolidated Industries, Inc.Inventor: David B.
