  • Patent number: 8289952
Abstract: A voice-over-IP (VoIP) connection is established over a radio interface with a mobile radio station. A current radio condition for the VoIP connection is determined, and from that, a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) for a portion of the VoIP connection. A VoIP voice encoding mode for a portion of the VoIP connection is selected based on the determined modulation coding scheme. VoIP voice is then encoded into a number of VoIP encoded frames using the selected VoIP voice encoding mode which has an associated bit rate. An optimal number of VoIP encoded frames is included in a VoIP packet for transport over the VoIP connection given the selected voice encoding mode and the selected MCS. Other adjustments may be made to ensure robustness of the VoIP connection and/or to maximize capacity.

  • Patent number: 8179858
Abstract: A method of controlling the cell re-selection of a mobile station (4) between cells (1) of a cellular-based radio access network (6). The method comprises the steps of determining when a cell re-selection for the mobile station (4) is appropriate, determining whether or not the mobile station (4) is involved in a push to talk service comprising a series of talk bursts, and if the mobile station is involved in a push to talk service, delaying the cell re-selection until such time as a period of silence between talk bursts occurs.

  • Publication number: 20070081510
Abstract: In a packet-based communication network (10) polling of connected user equipment is performed according to a first type (T1) and a complementary second type (T2). Upon receiving polling according to type one (T1) a user equipment (30) is allowed to transmit user data packets (UP) if any are available, otherwise the user equipment (30) can remain silent. In response to polling according to type two (T2), the user equipment (30) is required to either transmit an available user data packet (UP) or a dummy data packet (DP).

  • Patent number: 7188300
Abstract: Flexibly configurable layer one transport channels produce radio blocks in response to communication information and extract communication information from radio blocks. Each transport channel can include an encoder or a decoder coupled to and cooperable with a data puncturer or a data repeater. An information source can produce for each transport channel first configuration information and second configuration information, wherein the first configuration information is indicative of how the associated transport channel is to be configured if a first modulation type is used for a current radio block, and wherein the second configuration information is indicative of how the associated transport channel is to be configured if a second modulation type is used for the current radio block. The physical layer can include a description information source that provides description information from which various configurations of the transport channels can be determined.

  • Patent number: 7103020
Abstract: Flexibly configurable layer one transport channels produce radio blocks in response to communication information and extract communication information from radio blocks. One of the transport channels can be enabled to extract its associated communication information from a radio block while another of the transport channels is maintained disabled. The one transport channel provides the extracted communication information to a decision maker in a higher layer. In response to the extracted communication information, the decision maker decides whether the other transport channel should be enabled, and provides to the physical layer an indication of its decision.

  • Patent number: 6907030
Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for communication within a TDMA based system. The system may include one or more receivers, each receiver being configurable in a plurality of states, wherein in each state the physical layer headers associated with received frames of information are used to determine the format in which the received frames of information are to be decoded.

  • Publication number: 20020032030
Abstract: Method in a communication system using a logical control channel transmitting a control channel message, including handover information, between a mobile station 10 and a base station 26, in said system, using a first control channel modulation scheme. The method comprises the step of re-transmitting the control channel message using a second control channel modulation scheme, if the control channel message using the first control channel modulation scheme is not received or understood by the mobile station. According to a preferred embodiment the control channel is a Fast Associated Control Channel (FACCH).
