  • Patent number: 10705629
Abstract: A system is provided that includes a display or other support surface to which a repositionable control device may be removably mounted. The display may emit light. The repositionable control device may be a repositionable knob that has light sensors. The display may be directed to emit the light in a predetermined time-varying search pattern while the light sensors make measurements of the emitted light. The repositionable knob may wirelessly transmit the light sensor measurements to control circuitry associated with the display. The control circuitry may process the light sensor measurements or other sensor measurements to determine the location of the repositionable control device on the display. Visible tick marks or other scale information may be displayed around the periphery of the knob. An electromagnetic actuator may provide adjustable detents. Wireless power may be received by the knob.

  • Publication number: 20060130692
Abstract: Multi-point confocal microscopy, bright field microscope imaging, computer-controlled positioning stages, and an algorithm for automated leveling are the basis for a powerful but simple tool for aligning stamps used in precise pattern transfer to substrates. The system is relatively inexpensive and brings a capability similar to that of a photolithographic mask aligner to the world of elastomeric-stamp-based lithography. Alignment of the stamp and substrate is possible without contact between the two before printing.

  • Publication number: 20060116340
Abstract: Hammerhead ribozymes that target components critical to HSV replication (ICP4, UL20, UL30, and UL54) were synthesized and shown to efficiently cleave target RNA encoding a portion of these components in in vitro assays. Several cloned cell lines stably expressing these ribozymes were established. HSV-mediated plaque formation was dramatically reduced in cells stably transfected with an anti-HSV ribozyme compared to non-transfected cells.

  • Publication number: 20060114544
Abstract: Polarization light modulators are based on an interferometric design in which a polarizing beam splitter serves as a polarizer and analyzer. A polarization displacement device shifts orthogonally polarized light beams parallel to the long axis of their elongated cross sections. Phase shifts are imparted to the orthogonally polarized beams by linear array MEMS optical phase shift devices. The output of the light modulator is a line image which may be scanned to form a two-dimensional image. Features to improve brightness, contrast and overall compactness of design are disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20060114543
Abstract: A differential interferometric light modulator and image display system comprises a polarizing beam splitter, a polarization displacement device and a linear array of MEMS optical phase shifting devices to modulate a line image. The polarizing beam splitter acts as both the polarizer and the analyzer in an interferometer. The polarization displacement device divides polarized light from a polarizer into orthogonal polarization components which propagate parallel to one another. The MEMS optical phase shifting device array imparts a relative phase shift onto the polarization components and returns them to the polarization displacement device where they are recombined and sent to the analyzer. The MEMS optical phase shifting devices are electronically controlled and convert electronic image data into actual light modulation.

  • Publication number: 20060054502
Abstract: A device for creating microgradients in solution is disclosed. The device contains a microfluidic channel with openings at each end and two or more small apertures to a bath. Electrodes are placed in the openings at either end of the channel and an electrical power supply is connected to the electrodes. Several distinct current paths exist from one end of the channel to the other. For example current may flow from one electrode, through a portion of the channel, through an aperture into the bath, back through another aperture into the channel, and along another portion of the channel to the other electrode. Current flows along all possible connected paths when an electric field is applied along the channel and induces fluid flow into and out of the apertures in the channel. Fluid flow through the apertures results in the formation of microgradients in solution near the microfluidic channel device.
