  • Patent number: 9407380
Abstract: A network node communicates with a radio access node that communicates application traffic on behalf of machine-to-machine (M2M) devices via a satellite link. The network node comprises a database and a control unit. The database stores a plurality of recovery modes. Each recovery mode indicates one or more types of application traffic that M2M devices are or are not allowed to transmit when operating according to that recovery mode. The control unit detects a loss of communication across, or congestion on, the satellite link, selects one of the recovery modes, and requests the radio access node to broadcast the selected recovery mode over a 3GPP-based broadcast channel in order to instruct the M2M devices to transmit only application traffic allowed in accordance with the selected recovery mode.

  • Patent number: 9408115
Abstract: A master monitor/control (“M/C”) unit selects a base station controller (“BSC”) to serve a mobile radio base station (“RBS”). In one embodiment, the master M/C unit is configured to monitor and assess performance parameters of a communications link between the mobile RBS and a serving BSC and alternative communications links between the mobile RBS and a plurality of other BSCs. The master M/C unit is also configured to determine if the performance parameter of an alternative communications link between the mobile RBS and one of the plurality of other BSCs is better than the performance parameter of the communications link between the mobile RBS and the serving BSC, and select the one of the plurality of other BSCs as an alternative BSC accordingly. The master M/C unit is also configured to provide a new configuration for the mobile RBS and the alternative BSC to enable the alternative communications link therebetween.

  • Patent number: 9014083
Abstract: A method is performed in a system integration unit located on the vessel and coupled with a radio device and a plurality of satellite transceivers that each provide a transport route for communication. A method for routing data packets from vessel to a fixed communication center through to one of the transport routes. The method determines which transport route should be used to communicate the data packet based on the availability of all transport routes and the desirability of using each transport route for the transmission of the data packet. The method then routes the data packet to the most desirable transport route that is available for communication data packets.

  • Patent number: 6735184
Abstract: A system and method for a terrestrial IP network for efficient transmissions within a satellite-terrestrial network. The terrestrial network of a satellite-terrestrial telecommunications system provides for IP signaling between satellite access nodes without the use of dedicated, circuit switched trunks therebetween. The terrestrial network configuration provides for mobile services switching center redundancy and load sharing, as well as direct packet routing between satellite access nodes. Alternatively, a signaling gateway may be interposed on dedicated satellite access node links for converting inter-satellite access node traffic into an IP signaling format for efficient utilization of the direct links.

  • Patent number: 6671377
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for downloading encrypted network information, such as Base Transceiver Station (BTS) coordinates, in a point-to-point manner between the network and a Mobile Station (MS) with location calculation capabilities. When an MS registers with the network, the MS shall indicate as part of the “early classmark” process its location calculation capabilities and the type algorithm to be used for deciphering the network information. As a result of a mobile originating request for assistance data, the network shall encrypt and download the network information to the MS. The MS deciphers the network information in order to position itself.

  • Patent number: 6567668
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method for managing the eligibility of access to a satellite-based network by mobile originated and mobile terminated calls by including, for example, within the tables that the Terrestrial Network Manager (TNM) consults, information regarding areas with no allowed service area and areas with restricted service. After the location and the International Mobility Subscriber Identity (IMSI) of the calling and called party are determined, the tables are consulted and a determination is made regarding whether the calling or called party should be excluded from the satellite/beam selection. Advantageously, the systems and methods of the present invention are not dependent on accurate location information being stored in the MSC/VLR.

  • Patent number: 6516197
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for requiring a mobile station (MS) to notify the network of the number and/or duration of positionings performed by the MS. A service program or API (Application Program Interface), e.g., JAVA program, which is responsible for collecting information regarding the requests for location information, is either included in a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card, or other memory, of the MS, or downloaded to the SIM card in the MS. As a result of performing a location calculation, the API within the MS initiates a mobile originated reporting Short Message Service (SMS) or Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) message to the serving network, which includes a time stamp of the time and date the positioning request was received, the number and/or duration of the positioning(s) and the final location of MS.

  • Patent number: 6504839
Abstract: Apparatus, methods and systems for routing information from a packet-switched network to a mobile device communicating with a wireless telecommunications network, wherein a call request for a mobile device is received from the packet-switched network at a first node of the wireless telecommunications network; a determination is made of the serving node of the wireless telecommunications network in communication with the mobile device and whether the serving node is coupled to the packet-switched network; and the call request is redirected to the serving node in response to an affirmative indication that the serving node is coupled to the packet-switched network. Alternatively, in response to a negative indication that the serving node is coupled to the packet-switched network, the call request is routed from the first node to the serving node through a circuit-switched network coupled intermediate to the first node and the serving node.

  • Patent number: 6463289
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for defining restricted positioning areas by geographical location. The restricted area information can be established by the cellular network or the mobile subscriber, and can be stored in a database, such as an Intelligent Network (IN) node. An IN trigger can be included in the subscriber information provided to the serving Mobile Switching Center/Visitor Location Register (MSC/VLR) or the IN trigger can be stored in specific MSC/VLR's that have restricted positioning areas for all mobile subscribers. Upon receiving the calculated location estimate, the IN trigger is activated, and the MSC/VLR transmits the calculated location estimate to the IN node to determine whether the calculated location estimate can be provided to the requesting Location Services (LCS) client based upon the defined restricted positioning area information.

  • Patent number: 6463288
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for monitoring all successful and unsuccessful attempts by third parties to locate a mobile subscriber and providing identity information associated with those third parties to the mobile subscriber. Whenever a positioning request is received by a Gateway Mobile Location Center (GMLC), the GMLC, before returning a response to the requester, e.g., either location information or a rejection message, maintains a positioning record of all information related to the positioning request for the mobile subscriber, including the identity of the requester. The GMLC can download this positioning record to a node associated with the mobile subscriber, such as a Mobile Station (MS) or billing center.

  • Patent number: 6366791
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for allowing network operators to download ringing tone pattern(s) associated with one or more musical scores to mobile stations (MSs) according to the music selection of mobile subscribers associated with the MSs. Once executed, the ringing tone pattern provides a musical ringing tone on the MS, instead of the normal ringing tone. In addition, ringing tone patterns can be used to enhance the “distinctive ringing” function within the MS. Thus, instead of using distinctive ringing patterns to represent different called party numbers, different music can be used.
