  • Publication number: 20080231227
Abstract: Disparate robotic devices can be automatically recharged and reprogrammed by self-scheduling individual time slots for the available recharging area(s) of a charging station. These charging stations provide a nest to which each robot must return periodically for power. These nests can also provide new tasking or patches for the robotic devices. The charging station and the robotic devices are both provided with communications capabilities and a protocol by which they can negotiate to find a time slot in which the device can be recharged, as well as determining a correct connector and a battery type.

  • Publication number: 20080222647
Abstract: A load balancing method incorporates temporarily inactive machines as part of the resources capable of executing tasks during heavy process requests periods to alleviate some of the processing load on other computing resources. This method determines which computing resources are available and prioritizes these resources for access by the load balancing process. A snap shot of the resource configuration and made secured along with all data on this system such that no contamination occurs between resident data on that machine and any data placed on that machine as put of the load balancing activities. After a predetermined period of time or a predetermined event, the availability of the temporary resources for load balancing activities ends. At this point, the original configuration and data is restored to the computing resource such that no trace of use of the resource in load balancing activities is detected to the user.

  • Patent number: 7406423
Abstract: Remote enforcement of operational protocols is provided. In a remote environment, such as that found with a police environment, voice recognition technology is used to determine the situation and invoke actions according to an appropriate protocol. Actions may be set to be mandatory or discretionary. A secure log is maintained of the actions undertaken. Actions include automatically retrieving data from a remote database, automatically communicating with another unit or headquarters, and automating devices used in the remote environment. Voice recognition technology also extracts data from the user's speech and builds variables used as parameters in performing the actions. Data is returned to the user in either audible or textual form and either played to the user on a speaker or displayed on a display device.

  • Publication number: 20080178111
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer program product for monitoring the performance of a system. The mechanism of the present invention provides an interface in the form of a graphical user interface (GUI) to communicate multiple layers of system performance data to an operator. An operator monitors this display of information and uses it to determine how to adjust the system to optimize system performance. This mechanism of the present invention provides immediate feedback to an operator by displaying a trail of metric points, wherein the metric points indicate the status of system performance over a period of time. In this manner, the display mechanism of the present invention immediately conveys to an operator whether the system is operating within predefined margins, the results of performance adjustments made to the system, as well as predictions or trends for the system.

  • Publication number: 20080172553
Abstract: A method and system for determining an optimal order for rebooting servers in a data center. After an abnormal shutdown event in a data center, a power restoration management (PRM) server detects a restoration of power capable of being available for a rebooting of servers in the data center. A power restoration management program automatically and dynamically determines an optimal order for rebooting the servers, where the order is a result of applying policies based on weighted factors. The PRM server or a manual process reboots the servers in the determined order. The rebooting includes an enhancement of a financial position of an organizational entity associated with the data center. The enhancement of the financial position includes increasing a financial profit of the organizational entity or decreasing a financial loss of the organization entity.

  • Publication number: 20080167856
Abstract: A transliteration mechanism is provided that allows a user to view a text in one Indian language, to highlight a word or phrase, and to easily transliterate the selected word or phrase into a target language or script. The mechanism may be an application, an applet, or a plug-in to another application, such as a Web browser. The target language and/or script may be stored in a user profile. Preferably, the source language may be any known Indian language in any known script.

  • Patent number: 7385510
Abstract: A system, method, and medium for tracking the contents of a container in which the items stored in the container are provided with radio frequency identification (“RFID”) tags, and a tracker affixed to the container periodically polls the items in the container to collect identification information. An electronic manifest, also attached to the container, is updated periodically to reflect items which have been added to the container or removed from the container since the last polling. The tracker emulates an RFID tag when polled by an external reader, responding by uploading the entire electronic manifest to the external reader. The external reader and the affixed reader preferably utilize distinct RFID protocols so as to produce a hierarchical manifest data structure with high integrity.

  • Publication number: 20080112300
Abstract: A system for protecting data within a portable storage device. A self-destruct unit associated with the portable storage device is enabled. If the portable storage device is not within a pre-specified route tolerance or if the portable storage device is not at a pre-selected identification checkpoint, an alert message is sent. In response to receiving a particular response, a self-destruct signal is sent to the enabled self-destruct unit. Then the enabled self-destruct unit creates an electromagnetic pulse from a xenon flash tube to render confidential data within the portable storage device unusable.

  • Publication number: 20080102785
Abstract: A means for a person in distress to use a mobile device to communicate covertly with an Emergency Response Center is provided. The means contains a response designed not to alert an abductor of the communication as well as to indicate whether the person is indeed in distress. The means also allows the Emergency Response Center to locate both the distressed person and a mobile device using GPS or triangulation. The device may be in regular operation mode or in distress mode. When the device is in the distress mode, it will appear to be in normal operating mode if in operation or it will appear to be off if off. In addition, the device may be used for forensic purposes since it may provide voice and video data of the situation at an emergency location to the Emergency Response Center.

  • Publication number: 20080104080
Abstract: A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer usable program code for accessing information in repositories. A determination is made as to whether a connector from a plurality of connectors may be used to retrieve the information for the item from the repositories for the request, wherein the connectors are reusable for accessing the repositories in response to receiving different requests in response to receiving a request from a requester for information about an item. Information is retrieved using the connector to form results in response to a determination that the connector may be used to retrieve the information about the item. The results are returned to the requester.

  • Publication number: 20080089023
Abstract: A heat extraction system is provided for a laptop computer that comprises a system unit that includes a set of heat sources and a video display unit that is movably attached to the system unit. The laptop computer has air inlets and air outlets that allow air to flow into the system unit, over the heat sources forming heated air, and exhaust the heated air. The laptop computer has a set of tubes, which have an inlet and an outlet, located behind a video display in the video display unit and an air connection from the air outlets to each inlet in the tubes. The set of tubes are formed such that heated air passing through a constriction in the set of tubes changes in velocity and pressure in order to satisfy the conservation of flow rate. Thus, heat produced by the heat sources is extracted from the laptop computer.

  • Patent number: 7310605
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer instructions for a method in a portable device for transliterating text. An image of the text is generated using a camera function in the portable device. The image is sent with an identification of a source language and a target language to a transliteration service using a wireless communications link. A response is received from the transliteration service, wherein the response contains a transliteration of the text in the target language. The transliteration is then presented on the portable device. The presentation may be, for example, text displayed on the portable device or in the form of speech presented audibly to the user.

  • Patent number: 7250938
Abstract: A user input mechanism is provided that allows a user to enter words as gestures on a virtual keyboard presented on the display device. The user input mechanism combines two existing and prevalent forms of user input: cursive handwriting and keyboard input. A familiar keyboard layout is presented on the display. A user then may place an implement, such as a stylus or the user's finger, in contact with the display. Typically, the implement will first touch the screen at a position of a first character in a word. The user then may move the implement along the surface of the display from character to character, spelling out a word.
