    Abstract: A carpenter's "square" has a first member with a spirit level so it can be held horizontal with one end elevated above a pitched roof, while the opposite end rests on the roof exactly 12 inches from the inside edge of a vertically movable member supported in the first member, and clamped to it by a thumb screw. This inside edge is graduated inches to read out roof pitch directly in "inches per foot".
