  • Patent number: 11354229
Abstract: Example embodiments of the present invention provide a method, an apparatus, and a computer program product for providing information lifecycle management using a federation of arrays. The method includes receiving a request to provision storage resources of a one big array according to a class of service, the one big array comprising heterogeneous storage resources, and causing the requested storage resources to be provisioned according to a provisioning policy. Execution of an information lifecycle management policy then may be initiated for management of data stored to the storage resources according to the class of service.

  • Patent number: 10089148
Abstract: Currently, administrators configure replication manually according to a data protection policy. Typically, such data protection policies are provided via a script or a similar input to provision storage devices. However, such manual configuration is subject to administrator error. For example, an administrator may not provision storage devices accurately according to a desired data protection policy. Further, this process is subject not only to human mistake, but also the administrative overhead required to manually provision the storage devices. Example embodiments of the present invention eliminate administration and reliability issues arising out of manual replication service configuration, thereby minimizing administrative costs and improving the user experience of handling data protection. Example embodiments of the present invention provide a method, an apparatus and a computer-program product for creating a policy-based replication service.

  • Patent number: 9736007
Abstract: IT organizations are challenged with maintaining data application and availability while satisfying service level agreements and compliance requirements. Unprecedented data growth is straining IT resources requiring greater investments, while capital and operational expenses are under scrutiny. Given this tension, IT organizations are seeking efficiency and optimization to regain control and meet business SLAs. Example embodiments of the present invention provide a method, an apparatus, and a computer program product for performing automated data protection with information technology (IT) infrastructure visibility. The method comprises receiving input regarding a desired state of a data protection environment for an IT infrastructure and creating a data protection environment according to the desired state of the data protection environment.

  • Patent number: 8712962
Abstract: In a first embodiment, a method and computer program product for use in replication comprising pushing a point in time (PIT) to a de-duplication device, creating a virtual LUN based on the PIT pushed to the de-duplication device, and exposing, via a Data Protection Appliance (DPA), the virtual LUN. In a second embodiment, a method and computer program product for use in replication comprising choosing an object to be recovered at a point in time (PI), spawning a virtual machine, creating a virtual LUN based on the PIT, exposing the virtual LUN to the virtual machine, recovering the object from the PIT mounted to the virtual machine, and un-exposing the virtual LUN to the virtual machine.

  • Patent number: 7266574
Abstract: A method may be provided for incrementally backing up data from a logically represented volume on disk media. The disk media is accessible by a client through a network connection. The client comprises an enterprise database application. The method identifies tracks of the logically represented volume that have changed since a last incremental backup operation by reading fresh data indications. Each of the fresh data indications corresponds to a track of the logically represented volume, and a given fresh data indication is indicative of whether its corresponding track has been changed since a last incremental backup operation. Files are identified for incremental backup. The identified files comprise blocks saved on a track deemed changed since a last incremental backup operation. The identified files are backed up from the disk media to sequential storage media through a high speed connection.

  • Patent number: 6938180
Abstract: A method is performed with an enterprise storage system comprising disk storage and sequential storage media. Alternatively, systems, subsystems, and computer media containing encoded portions are disclosed. The method serves the data storage needs of a given client coupled to the enterprise storage system via a network. A physical device level backup is performed, backing up data from the disk storage to the sequential storage media, while minimizing demands on the client. The device level backup comprises a complete image backup of data in a host device as defined from a perspective of the given client. A logical restore of data is performed on a file by file basis from physically backed data on the sequential storage media. The logical restore involves locating files requested by the client on the sequential storage media and recovering the files from the sequential storage media. The files comprise files defined in accordance with a files system defined by the client.

  • Patent number: 6804690
Abstract: A system for providing high speed external backup and restoration of data in a data storage system. Individual data objects are backed up in logical order on backup media such as magnetic tape so that they may be retrieved individually. Minimized descriptions of backed up data are transmitted between the host and backup systems to control high speed transfer of data between data servers and backup devices on a separate data channel. The descriptions are manipulated by the backup system to comply with formats of any number of host systems and data storage systems and to efficiently map the backed up data onto the backup devices. The system also provides for restoration of data to the data storage system by using a host system to pre-allocate space for the restored data, obtaining mapping information for the allocated space from the host system, and then directly writing the restored data into the allocated space, based on the mapping information.
