The pre-telegraphing is performed after the primary process completes pressing and consolidation of the substrate/board. The pre-telegraphing process applies a water spray on the hot board immediately out of the primary process press, and before overlay application. The application of the water spray causes the surface of the board to swell and cure. A settling period follows to allow the top surface particles and strands to swell along with absorption and evaporation of the moisture. This is followed by surface sanding to remove the telegraphing and produce a smooth surface. This may then be followed by lamination of overlay(s). The process is completed by post-lamination treatment and coating of the board.

    Abstract: The method of this invention adheres a low emissivity radiant barrier material to an underlying lignocellulosic substrate within the primary manufacturing operation of the underlying lignocellulosic substrate. Thus, a radiant barrier covered substrate is formed by integrally joining the radiant barrier covering to a mat of lignocellulosic material during consolidation thereof with a first adhesive bonding material to form an underlying substrate. The integral joining operation can, for example, be accomplished by bonding the radiant barrier covering to a lignocellulosic mat in a product formation press. This is typically accomplished using a second adhesive bonding material for adhesion of the radiant barrier material to the lignocellulosic mat, and a first adhesive bonding material for consolidating the lignocellulosic mat to form a lignocellulosic substrate.

    Abstract: A method is provided for forming a durable, smooth-sided, multi-layer integral, composite engineered panel. The method typically is directed to first forming a mat comprising a plurality of layers of lignocellulosic strands or wafers. The plurality of layers of lignocellulosic strands or wafers are bonded together by an adhesive material. Then, at least one layer of smaller particles of lignocellulosic material is formed on the mat. This layer of smaller particles is blended together with an adhesive material thereby joining the layer of smaller particles to at least one outer surface of the mat. Next, at least one sheet of paper is joined to an outer layer of smaller particles of lignocellulosic material. This step takes place during the formation of the multi-layer integral, composite engineered panel. Finally, a substantially smooth outer surface is formed, upon pressing, in at least one surfaces of the multi-layer integral, composite engineered panel.

    Abstract: An improved method of making a molded composite article by combining a fibrous material with a binder to form a mixture, drying the mixture to a moisture content of about 6 wt. % to about 14 wt. % based on the weight of the fibrous material to form a mat, coating at least one surface of the mat with an aqueous solution comprising one or more additives selected from the group consisting of: a wetting agent, a mold release agent, a set retarder, and a binder. Thereafter, the mat is consolidated under heat and pressure to form the molded composite article. Articles formed by this improved method exhibit superior surface characteristics (i.e., smooth, hard surfaces), and do not require the need for any further treatment, such as use of tempering oils, application of post-consolidation sealers, or post-consolidation surface sanding procedures, prior to subsequent finishing operations, such as coating, gluing, painting, or other finishing to complete a desired article for commercial use.
