Patent number: 8012534Abstract: A process is provided for coating particulate materials with a thermoset polymeric coating that is less prone to creep or abrasion than a thermoplastic coating. The process provides for the coating of water-reactive and water-soluble materials which require a non-aqueous media for processing and also provides for the coating of particulate materials which must be processed in water. Also, all organics may be recovered, and there is no solvent contamination of water. It is emphasized that this abstract is provided to comply with the rules requiring an abstract that will allow a searcher or other reader to quickly ascertain the subject matter of the technical disclosure. It is submitted with the understanding that it will not be used to interpret or limit the scope of the claims.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 2009Date of Patent: September 6, 2011Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: David A. Ciaramitaro, Brian A. Zentner, Andrew J. Lieux, Anna R. Merritt

Patent number: 6872266Abstract: A recyclable energetic composition and method of processing energetic compositions cured by cyclo-addition of azido groups of the polymer binder with di- and/or tri-acetylene curatives (components) to form triazole linkages, such that the cure reaction is accelerated or delayed at will without degradation, allowing storage and later recycling of unused material for reduction of hazardous waste, and reduction of pollution.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 2003Date of Patent: March 29, 2005Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: David Ciaramitaro

Patent number: 6805760Abstract: This invention relates to energetic compositions, which offer increased performance in conjunction with a total absence of hydrogen chloride in the combustion products. The formulation avoids the use of halogen based oxidizers to prevent the formation of halogen based byproducts. The formulations disclosed herein use ammonium dinitramide as a primary oxidizer, which is a more energetic molecule than ammonium perchlorate. The solid propellant formulations disclosed herein comprise about 5 to about 10 weight % of at least one energetic binder, about 20 to about 35 weight % of an energetic plasticizer; about 25 to about 45 weight % of ammonium dinitramide as a primary oxidizer; about 0 to about 20 weight % of particulate aluminum having a particle size of about 1 &mgr;m to about 60 &mgr;m; and about 0 to about 20 weight % of ultrafine aluminum having a particle size of less than 1 &mgr;m.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 2003Date of Patent: October 19, 2004Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of NavyInventors: Russell Reed, Jr., David A. Patent number: 6113712Abstract: ADN stabilizers of aromatic nitrogen-containing heterocyclic organic compounds, such as pyridines, pyrimidines, pyrazines, and triazines substituted with amino, hydroxy or other activating groups. The stabilizers being added to the ADN in an amount of from about 0.001 weight percent to about 5 weight percent of the ADN.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1998Date of Patent: September 5, 2000Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: David A. Patent number: 4637848Abstract: High density water gel explosives having relatively large amounts of low density sensitizers are prepared by evenly dispersing a densifying material therethrough. Separation of the densifying material during the mixing and packaging of the water gel explosive is prevented by adding from about 0.1 to 2% comminuted paper to the water gel. It has been found that the paper greatly increases the viscosity of the composition, so that the heavier densifying materials do not settle out. The paper has also been found to contribute to the stability of the explosive gel over prolonged storage periods.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1986Date of Patent: January 20, 1987Assignee: Apache Powder CompanyInventors: David A. Patent number: 4312272Abstract: The present invention is an improved detonating cord with flash suppressing properties. In one of its broadest aspects, the invention comprises a detonating cord including a non-extruded coating comprising a halogenated polymer. More particularly, the polymer is included in a wrapped coating such as braid or tape surrounding the explosive core. Preferably the polymer is highly halogenated, the preferred polymers being vinylidene chloride, polytetrafluoroethylene, and polyvinylchloride.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1980Date of Patent: January 26, 1982Assignee: Apache Powder CompanyInventors: James J.
