  • Patent number: 7127175
Abstract: A network is provided that includes a plurality of antennas coupled over the network to a plurality of base stations. The network can be optical or constructed with RF microwave links. The base stations are configured to provide cellular transmission. A plurality of links couple the plurality of antennas and the plurality of base stations. At least one link of the plurality of links provides multiple transmission paths between at least a portion of the base stations with at least a portion of the antennas. In one implementation, at least one link of the plurality of links is shared by at least two cellular operators on different transmission paths. In another implementation, at least a portion of the plurality of base stations are in a common location and at least a portion of the antennas are geographically disbursed.

  • Publication number: 20050250503
Abstract: A method for improving spectral efficiency of a wireless network is provided. A microcell concept is utilized to improve isolation between the reuse pairs of antennas, thus significantly reducing reuse distance and increasing the network capacity. Radiation profiles of the reuse pair of antennas are positioned in a way which increases the isolation and thus improves the signal to interference ratio. Directional antennas are employed to further increase isolation between the reuse pair. Shielding from the surrounding structures is utilized to further increase the isolation. Additional antennas are placed near the cell boundary to further increase the signal to interference ratio and reduce deep fades in multipath environment.

  • Publication number: 20040198453
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for providing wireless data or voice coverage in a region by employing existing poles as part of a distribution network. Base station equipment is placed in a co-location facility, and then the BTS signals are distributed over a communication network to remote pole locations, where the signal is radiated from antennas mounted on the poles. This coverage can employ various current and future standards, including cellular standards such as GSM, CDMA, and UMTS, and IP data standards such as 802.11a and 802.11b.
