Patent number: 7406331Abstract: A combination mobile communication device and camera that combines a hand-held mobile terminal and camera in the same physical package is described herein. The combination mobile communication device and camera uses one or more multi-function controls to control communication functions and camera functions. A user selectively places the device in either a communication mode for engaging in wireless communication with a remote device, or in a camera mode for capturing and/or viewing images. A multi-function control disposed on a side of the combination mobile communication device and camera comprises a multi-directional button that controls a communication function, such as the volume of the speaker, when the device is in a communication mode. When the device is in a camera mode, the multi-function control is used as a zoom control.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2003Date of Patent: July 29, 2008Assignee: Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications ABInventor: David Desmond Middleton

Patent number: 7085590Abstract: Mobile terminal with ergonomic imaging functions. The present invention, by way of example embodiments, provides for a mobile terminal with ergonomic imaging or camera functions. A single display can be used, for example in portrait mode while terminal functions are being used and in landscape mode while imaging functions are being used. The change between the two orientations can be accomplished automatically. In some embodiments, the capability is also provided to process an image for assignment to a terminal function, where the image has at least one display attribute that makes it at least partly unsuitable for use with the terminal function. The processing may include resizing, cropping, and/or rotating the image. This processing can be accomplished for example, so that a landscape image can be viewed conveniently in a portrait orientation.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2004Date of Patent: August 1, 2006Assignee: Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications ABInventors: Peter J Kennedy, Laurie A. Patent number: 6195431Abstract: A rotational hinge for use with a flip cover moveable between a first position and a second position in response to a biasing force is disclosed. The rotational hinge includes a housing integrated with a flip cover and capable of rotational movement about a central axis between the first and second positions. A torsional spring mechanism integrated with the housing converts a biasing force along the central axis of the housing into rotational movement about the central axis of the housing when moved from the first to the second positions. A damping mechanism connected to the torsional spring mechanism damps the biasing force along the central axis of the housing.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1998Date of Patent: February 27, 2001Assignee: Ericsson Inc.Inventor: David Desmond Middleton

Patent number: 6091474Abstract: A mounting assembly is used to mount a liquid crystal display (LCD) to a printed circuit board. The mounting assembly includes a display support which is mounted to the printed circuit board and supports the display in spaced relationship to the printed circuit board. A connector with integral spring contacts snaps into an opening into the display support to electrically connect the contacts on the LCD to the contacts on the printed circuit board. The connector extends over a top surface of the LCD display and functions as a mechanical retention element.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1997Date of Patent: July 18, 2000Assignee: Ericsson, Inc.Inventors: David Desmond Middleton, Stacy Neil Smith, Shawn Michael Stephenson

Patent number: 5745567Abstract: A pair of embossments provided on either mounting arms of a cover pivotably attachable to a housing or, alternatively, provided on mounting surfaces of the housing, engage specifically defined recesses formed in the member on which the embossments are not formed. The embossments and recesses are all coaxially aligned with respect to an axis passing through a portion of the housing and about which the cover rotates between open and closed positions. The embossments are shaped such that positive engagement in the recess is assured when the cover is at predefined positions, such as the open and closed positions, thus inhibiting movement of the cover from the selected position. The present invention is particularly adaptable to small, portable telecommunications instruments, such as cellular phones having a flip cover, and effectively solves the problem of detent member breakage if the instrument is dropped or the need for costly spring mechanisms.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1996Date of Patent: April 28, 1998Assignee: Ericsson, Inc.Inventor: David Desmond Middleton
