  • Patent number: 4406699
Abstract: The present invention relates to a metal-oxide ceramic composition useful in induction heating applications for treating uranium and uranium alloys. The ceramic composition is electrically conductive at room temperature and is nonreactive with molten uranium. The composition is prepared from a particulate admixture of 20 to 50 vol. % niobium and zirconium oxide which may be stabilized with an addition of a further oxide such as magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, or yttria. The composition is prepared by blending the powders, pressing or casting the blend into the desired product configuration, and then sintering the casting or compact in an inert atmosphere. In the casting operation, calcium aluminate is preferably added to the admixture in place of a like quantity of zirconia for providing a cement to help maintain the integrity of the sintered product.

  • Patent number: 4305551
Abstract: An improved arrangement of thread winders comprising forward facing horizontal cantilevered bobbin winding spindles with automatic bobbin push off means and bobbin supports on rotors arranged for automatic bobbin exchange between the spindles and the supports, one rotor being dedicated to each winder, characterized by, in combination, a hoist for each winder providing an upper and a lower operating position, a rotor for each winder comprising at least two horizontal bobbin supports and rotatable about a vertical axis to align either support with the winder spindle in its lower position for bobbin exchange therewith, and a platform above the rotors providing operator access to the winders in their upper position.

  • Patent number: 4252564
Abstract: The concentration of carbon in uranium metal ingots induction cast from derbies prepared by the bomb-reduction of uranium tetrafluoride in the presence of magnesium is effectively reduced to less than 100 ppm by removing residual magnesium fluoride from the surface of the derbies prior to casting. This magnesium fluoride is removed from the derbies by immersing them in an alkali metal salt bath which reacts with and decomposes the magnesium fluoride. A water quenching operation followed by a warm nitric acid bath and a water rinse removes the residual salt and reaction products from the derbies.

  • Patent number: 4114338
Abstract: A reinforcing plate for use underneath two or more lapped thin gauge sheets to stiffen the lapped joint for prevention of damage to the seal from loading and to provide uniform compressant of sealant between the lapped sheets. The plate comprises an elongated planar member having pairs of parallel cuts evenly spaced along its length extending transversely from one edge thereof for substantially one half its width, the material between each of the pairs of cuts being bent into a down turned mounting flange of L-shaped cross section.
