    Abstract: A packer for sealing an annular region in a wellbore is provided. The packer includes a packing element which is held through bi-directional forces. The packer first comprises an inner mandrel. Disposed around the inner mandrel are three tubulars: (1) a top sleeve; (2) a bottom sleeve; and (3) a booster sleeve. A packing element is disposed circumferentially around the outer surface of the booster sleeve. The top sleeve and bottom sleeve each include an upper compression member which rides across the booster sleeve in order to compress the packing element. The packing element is expanded outward from the packer to engage a surrounding string of casing through compressive forces provided by the top and bottom sleeves. Thereafter, differential pressure applied above or below the packer acting on the packer element and booster sleeve may provide additional compression of the packer element.

    Abstract: A hydraulic liner hanger is provided. The liner hanger first comprises a tubular body. A plurality of slips are disposed radially around the outer surface of the body. In one arrangement, each slip has wickers for engaging the inner surface of a surrounding string of casing. Each slip is connected to a slip ring, the slip ring also being circumferentially disposed around the outer surface of the body. At least some of the slip members are received upon a wedge surface, or cone(s). In operation, an expander tool such as a hydraulic setting tool acts upon the liner hanger, causing the slips to be expanded into frictional engagement with the surrounding string of casing. The operator is then able to slack off the weight of the liner, allowing multiple slips to engage the casing and to suspend the liner therebelow.

    Abstract: A dog sub is provided for use in an assembly for running liners with weight-set packers and/or other mechanically or hydraulically actuated devices that need to be located. The dogs are retained by a sleeve so that an applied pickup force to determine that the running string had released from the liner can be applied which even results in removal of the dog sub from the extension tube of the weight-set packer. The dogs are held in a retracted position, even if taken out of the extension tube initially. Thereafter, the dog sub is supported off the extension tube and the locking sleeve on the dogs is liberated, with the dogs inside the extension tube. A subsequent pickup force allows the dogs to move outwardly, whereupon a subsequent setdown force locates the dogs on the setting extension tube. A subsequent setdown force sets the packer and breaks a breakable member, such as a shear pin.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved method for multilateral completion and cementing (i.e., sealing) the juncture between primary and lateral wellbores. The completion method of the present invention addresses the issue of cementation and sealing of junctures between vertical and lateral wellbores. It is desirable to have the ability to re-enter each lateral wellbore as well as maintain the option to perform any function that could be done in a single wellbore. For this reason, cemented and sealed lateral wellbores are desirable so that normal isolation, stimulation or any other operation can be achieved. The method allows sealing and reworking of either wellbores with single laterals or multiple laterals and provides safe durable junctions therebetween. The method of this invention utilizes a "hook" liner hanger system.
