    Abstract: A system for overriding an EMD locomotive engine protective device which includes a low water pressure sensing device in communication with the engine cooling system for shutting down the engine when low water pressure in the engine is sensed, the override system comprising a water assist pump connected to a source of water and communicating with the protective device for supplying pressurized water to the low water pressure sensing device to maintain relatively high water pressure to prevent the device from shutting down the engine; and a controller for activating the water assist pump during start up of the engine.

    Abstract: A hand brake system (40) for a rail vehicle providing a hand brake position alarm (76) before a train is moved with a hand brake not fully released. A switch (56) detects the position of a hand brake drive chain (18) to provide a brake engaged signal (60). The weight of the drive chain is supported through a load path that bypasses the switch. A master controller reverser handle position detector (74) provides a reverser handle position signal (72) when the reverser handle is moved out of neutral in preparation for providing power to the locomotive drive motors (15). A relay (70) is used to actuate the multiunit wheel slip indicator (54) and the general alarm bell (52) in every locomotive of the train consist when the brake engaged signal is coincident with the master controller reverser handle position signal. This combination of alarms, which normally indicates a locked axle when the train is above a predetermined speed, is interpreted as a hand brake position alarm when the train is at rest.

    Abstract: A personal emergency response system in which a hand held portable transmitter (12) activates a base unit (14) interfaced with the telephone network (16) to dial 9-1-1 and permit direct communications with the operator (18) at the public safety answering point even though the user (10) is unable to reach a telephone (36). The transmitter (12) activates the base unit (14) as well as optional remote units (48) located throughout the user's residence or place of business. The base unit (14) and remote units (48) include speaker-phone communication capabilities which permit two-way communications between the user (10) and the 9-1-1 system operator (18).
