  • Patent number: 6397328
Abstract: A method for verifying that the expected components of a postage metering system includes alternate embodiments for verifying a PSD coupled to a host system is the expected PSD. The method further includes verifying the host system as the expected host system. A first message is encrypted in the PSD using a first cryptographic key to obtain a first encrypted message. The first encrypted message is sent to the host system which decrypts the first encrypted message using a second cryptographic key. The host system then encrypts a second message derived from the decrypted first encrypted message using the second cryptographic key. The host system then sends the encrypted second message to the PSD which decrypts the second encrypted message in the PSD using the first cryptographic key.

  • Patent number: 6260144
Abstract: A PSD has a private key which is associated with a specific public key that is stored in the host PC. The host PC sends the PSD public key private key to the PSD. If the PSD determines that the received PSD public key corresponds to its private key, the system has determined that the expected PSD is connected to the Host system and the PSD is activated to accept postal value requests from the host PC. Additionally, a PSD state identification, such as a checksum of a PSD transaction log file stored in the host may be verified by the PSD, which also has stored therein a PSD transaction log file. In this manner the PSD verifies that the PSD has performed all transactions with the host PC sending the checksum. Methods for verifying in the PSD that the expected host PC is coupled to the PSD mirrors the two embodiments for verifying the expected PSD.

  • Patent number: 5293319
Abstract: A system for processing documents with value markings thereon, having a reading element for reading the value markings, an accounting element for accounting for the value, and a marking element responsive to the accounting element for marking the document with information representing successful accounting of the value and uniquely identifying the accounting element. The marking element is positioned with respect to the document so as to cause the mark to be placed on the document. The value information, the reading element, the accounting element and the marking element are all positioned within a secure housing.

  • Patent number: 4796193
Abstract: A system for maintaining the security of user postal funding charges and allowing accurate accounting of delivery charges includes the step of and apparatus for printing on a mailpiece or type at the originating station value to cover delivery charges along with encrypted validation information which is later employed to account for postage funds, particularly at the time of delivery. A visual marking is imprinted on the mailpiece at the time of accounting to show that accounting has occurred. The mail deliverer can rely on the visual indication for assurance that processing and accounting has occurred.
