Publication number: 20230214468Abstract: Examples are disclosed that relate to computing devices and methods for authenticating a user. In one example, a method for authenticating a user at a computing device comprises activating a fingerprint reader integrated into a power key of the computing device, and activating a visual indicator at the power key to indicate a status of the fingerprint reader. Based at least in part on activating the fingerprint reader, a standby function of the power key is disabled. A fingerprint of the user is received via the fingerprint reader and used to authenticate the user. After authenticating the user, the visual indicator is deactivated and the standby function of the power key is re-enabled.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 8, 2021Publication date: July 6, 2023Applicant: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: David Earl WASHINGTON, Natalia Janina URBANOWICZ, Shunjiro EGUCHI, Alexander Norman BENNETT, Elizabeth Ann PINA

Patent number: 9639237Abstract: Context menus are described. In one or more implementations, an option is displayed in a user interface by a computing device, the option selectable to cause a representation of an object to be added to a context menu. In response to selection of the option, the context menu is configured by the computing device to include the representation of the object such that the representation of the object is selectable to launch the object by the computing device.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 2010Date of Patent: May 2, 2017Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: David Earl Washington, Lyon Wong, Aryeh N. Patent number: 9612670Abstract: A system and method for implementing an efficient and easy to user interface for a touch screen device. A cursor may be placed by a user using simple inputs. The device operates places the cursor coarsely and refines the cursor placement upon further input from the user. Text may be selected using a gripper associated with the cursor. The user interface allows text selection without occluding the text being selected with the user's finger or the gripper. For selecting text in a multi-line block of text, a dynamic safety zone is implemented to simplify text selection for the user.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 2011Date of Patent: April 4, 2017Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Jeffrey J. Weir, Jennifer L. Anderson, Jennifer Wolfe, Gerrit H. Hofmeester, Jan-Kristian Markiewicz, Andrew R. Brauninger, Stuart J. Stuple, David Earl Washington, Matthew J. Patent number: 9552411Abstract: Aspects of the subject matter described herein relate to paragraph snapping. In aspects, trending data is collected and prepared for sending to one or more target machines. Upon receiving the trending data, a target machines installs the trending data locally and deletes previously installed trending data. After installation, the trending data may be used to suggest text in response to input from a user. If a user selects suggested text, the text may be added to a local dictionary of the target machine.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 2013Date of Patent: January 24, 2017Assignee: MICROSOFT TECHNOLOGY LICENSING, LLCInventors: Daniel Ethan Keller, David A. Stevens, Bryan Douglas Scott, David Earl Washington
