  • Patent number: 5452407
Abstract: A method is described for representing a treatment site (10) of a patient as data suitable for use with a computer-aided design device (46). The method includes scanning the treatment site(10) with a scanning apparatus (40), such as a CT scanner, to produce image data; determining the image data that represents the surface of the item; generating vectors from the determined data; and associating the vectors with poles of a non-uniform rational B-spline so that a polynomial equation may be generated, which is a data form suitable for use with CAD devices.

  • Patent number: 5365996
Abstract: A method and apparatus is described for making a custom fixation device. The apparatus comprises a means for scanning a treatment site and for producing image data representative of the treatment site. A means for generating a set of vectors is included for defining a set of points, the set of vectors representative of the treatment site, the points associated with a surface, part of the surface representative of part of the treatment site, part of the surface hidden from view. Further, means for associating each point with a pole of a control polygon of a non-uniform rational B-spline, means responsive to the non-uniform rational B-spline for constructing a model of the treatment site, and means responsive to the model for constructing the fixation device are described.

  • Patent number: 5344421
Abstract: The present invention provides an adjustable bone plate assembly (10) comprising a plate (12) and washers (14). The plate (12) comprises an first surface (16) for engaging the bone, and a second surface (18) opposite the first surface (16). The plate (12) additionally comprises a plurality of slots (20) extending through the plate (12), and a plurality of protuberances (22) projecting from the second surface (18) of the plate (12). The washers (14) each comprise a first surface (24) having a plurality of indentations (28) for engaging the protuberances (22) of the plate (12) when a washer (14) is selectively placed over one of the plurality of slots (22).

  • Patent number: 5330477
Abstract: Apparatus and a method for promoting the healing of a bone having a fracture site or fusion site is provided. The apparatus includes a brace coupled to the site and adapted for stabilizing the site. Firmly coupled to the brace is an electronic circuit emitting an energy for stimulating the healing of the site, where the brace and the electronic circuit form substantially an integral unit.

  • Patent number: 5304210
Abstract: Apparatus for promoting healing in a bony structure having an injury is provided. A bone graft is positioned directly on a conductive mesh frame, which is placed over the bone injury site. A retainer is fastened to the conductive mesh frame and sandwiches the bone graft therebetween. Over the retainer a brace is fastened and further secured to the bony structure directly over the site of the injury. The brace effectively applies pressure on the retainer to effect an intimate contact between the fusion bone and the injury site. An electronic module is further mounted to the brace and coupled to the conductive mesh frame to deliver a stimulating energy to the conductive mesh frame.
