    Abstract: A molecular drag vacuum pump configured for pumping a gas stream from an inlet to an outlet, the pump including a high-speed spinning disk having a channel formed in its edge, disposed within a housing. A passageway is formed on the inside of the housing adjacent the disk, and gas comes in contact with surfaces of the spinning disk in successive stages, conformable wipers being disposed adjacent the spinning disk to direct the gas stream to the successive stages. The disk can be powered by an integral motor, comprising permanent magnets associated with the disk and cooperating coils associated with the housing.

Nozzle movement is preferably controlled by preprogrammed electronics which control movement of the nozzle and selective activation of the lights. Such an automated control system also may control the spray stream velocity. The flow streams are controlled to create a dynamic display which may be synchronized to music or other light shows.

    Abstract: A body-powered prosthetic arm is mountable on a socket attached to the arm stump of a person. The prosthetic arm includes a base for attachment to the socket, a forearm section having a proximal end and a distal end, a terminal device such as a hook, anthropomorphic hand, etc. attached to the distal end of the forearm section for selectively opening or closing, and an elbow joint for joining the proximal end of the forearm section to the base, the elbow joint being pivotable to enable moving the forearm section upwardly or downwardly. Control straps and cables fitted on the person are responsive to body movements of the person for selectively locking the elbow joint to prevent it from pivoting while allowing the terminal device to open or close or locking the terminal device to prevent it from opening or closing while allowing the elbow joint to pivot.

    Abstract: An individual person mobility simulator includes a base for placement on a support surface, a steering post extending upwardly from the base to terminate in an upper end, a seat mounted on the upper end of the steering post on which a human operator may sit, a torque/position sensor disposed between the seat and the steering post to sense changes in seat position caused by the operator, and foot stirrups into which the operator may place his feet, the foot stirrups being movably mounted on the steering post. A power source is provided to supply a resistive force to movement of the foot stirrups in response to and dependent upon resistance signals. A control unit supplies resistance signals to the power source to determine the amount of resistance to be applied to movement of the foot stirrups.

    Abstract: A prosthesis for a person with an amputation above the elbow is provided in which elbow motion is provided by an electrical motor contained within the prothesis. Operation of the motor is controlled by electric impulses from selected opposing muscle pairs on the amputee. The prosthesis is constructed with both internal and external modules which are readily replaceable. An electrically operated lock mechanism is provided for locking the elbow motion of the prosthesis. The locking mechanism is controlled by logic circuitry which in turn operates in response to electric impulses from the pair of muscles on the amputee. Novel means are also included which provide passive wrist movement and humeral rotation of the prosthesis. A removable battery module comprising rechargeable storage cells provides power for the motor and the electrically operated lock mechanism.

    Abstract: A compact traction device includes a housing and a plurality of constant tension spring units disposed within the housing. Each constant tension spring unit includes a cable which extends from the unit through an opening in the housing. As the cable is pulled out from the housing, a substantially constant tension is developed on the cable. Hook elements are coupled to the end of each cable to enable attaching the cable to a ring or other connecting structure which, in turn, would be attached to some part of the body of a person utilizing the traction device. A brake device is included in the housing for each constant tension spring unit to inhibit the rapid retraction into the housing of the cables when the cables are released. A clamp is mounted on the exterior of the housing to enable attaching the traction device to a support frame. The clamp allows positioning of the device to have almost any orientation.

    Abstract: Metabolic waste products from the blood of a patient are removed by pumping dialysis solution into the peritoneal cavity of the patient, and then (a) removing a portion of the dialysis solution from the peritoneal cavity which portion may vary from 1 percent to 90 percent of the total amount of dialysis solution administered to the peritoneal cavity and, (b) "cleaning" (removing metabolic waste products) this solution either through a dialyzer or by means of sorbent modules and then returning this same (cleansed) fluid into the peritoneal cavity. This cycle is repeated again and again until the desired amount of metabolic waste products are removed.Another subcutaneous peritoneal catheter is shown in the U.S. patent application Ser. No. 594,374 filed July 9, 1975, since abandoned in favor of Continuation-in-part Application Ser. No. 768,520 filed Feb. 14, 1977.

    Abstract: A dry-state bioelectrode having a self-sealing receptacle for receiving electrolyte and/or medicament fluid contents. The receptacle is attached at its opening to a sheet-like flexible base member having an opening in common with the receptacle opening, the bottom of the base member being adapted for fixation at a skin surface. A portion of the skin surface is exposed to the fluid contents of the receptacle through the common opening. An injection site communicates through the wall of the receptacle and provides controlled access for filling. Upon completion of filling, the receptacle self seals, retaining the fluid contents therein for application of iontophoresis treatment or other procedures requiring use of a potential gradient. An electrode plate is supported at an interior surface of the receptacle for supplying the desired electric potential.
