  • Patent number: 6028569
Abstract: An apparatus for deploying an umbrella-type structure such as an antenna reflector is provided. The umbrella-type structure includes a plurality of rib members movable from a stowed configuration to a deployed configuration. The deployment apparatus comprises a movable deployment tube and a hub pivotally attached to the plurality of rib members and slidably attached to the deployment tube. The hub is adapted to move along the deployment tube. The deployment apparatus further includes a plurality of rib deployment straps connecting the deployment tube to the rib members and a mechanism for moving the deployment tube in order to tension the rib deployment straps which in turn pull the rib members into the deployed configuration. The apparatus includes structural members made of composite materials, having a low (near zero) coefficient of thermal expansion, low density, and high strength.

  • Patent number: 5394564
Abstract: A strike zone mask provides an image of a batter's strike zone for increasing the precision with which an umpire may judge whether or not a pitched ball was a strike. A lens carriage is provided within the viewing opening of the mask, the carriage and lens intercepting the umpire's field of vision in one eye. Lenses within the carriage have vertical scored lines defining the horizontal width of home plate, and a horizontal bar adjustably affixed to the front of the carriage across the lower portion of the lens permits adjusting the height of the strike zone to different players by aligning the top of the lens with the batter's shoulders and the horizontal bar with his knees.

  • Patent number: 5280904
Abstract: A display for a football goal post comprises a net spanning the space between the uprights of the goal post, the net bearing a message. The message may be advertising, spirit booster information, team identification or the like, and it may be illuminated. Trip wires laced through and attached to the net detect contact with the net by a football, indicating successful penetration of the plane formed by the uprights and therefore a score. A trip signal from switches attached to the trip wires triggers for a predetermined period a flashing, illuminated display attached to the net, such as the illuminated message or separate chase lights around the perimeter of the net.
