    Abstract: A Fischer-Tropsch process is provided for synthesizing hydrocarbons, involving multiple Fischer-Tropsch reactor stages (110) arranged in series, and characterized by very low carbon monoxide conversion per Fischer-Tropsch reactor stage (110) and intermediate removal of water between reactor stages (110). In one embodiment, the system utilizes an iron-based catalyst and balances the molar H.sub.2 /CO feed ratio in the synthesis gas (108) with the overall H.sub.2 /CO consumption ratio across all of the Fischer-Tropsch reactor stages (110). In a preferred embodiment, carbon dioxide is recycled from the last in series of the Fischer-Tropsch reactor stages (110) to the synthesis gas generator (106). The system may advantageously utilize a gaseous hydrocarbon feed (102), such as obtained from natural gas, as feed for producing the synthesis gas (108).

    Abstract: A compound, monochloro biphenyl: CuAlCl.sub.4, has been isolated and proven to exist. Monochloro biphenyl can be any one of the possible three isomers, ortho, meta and para or can be any mixture of the three isomers.An improved process is provided for the separation of olefins, acetylenes, carbon monoxide or hydrogen sulfide from gaseous feedstreams. A solvent is made by dissolving CuAlCl.sub.4 in a liquid mixture of monochloro biphenyls. This solvent is used to contact the gas feedstream and dissolve by complexation the ligand part of the feedstream. The ligand-fat solvent is separated from the gas feedstream and the ligand recovered by running the solvent through an atmospheric reboiler and one or more reboilers under vacuum. The gas streams of the reboilers are combined and after cooling are a nearly pure stream of the separated ligand.Solutions of CuAlCl.sub.

    Abstract: H.sub.2 S:CuAlCl.sub.4 and 2 H.sub.2 S:CuAlCl.sub.4 are complex addition compounds which may be prepared by contacting CuAlCl.sub.4 with gaseous H.sub.2 S at partial pressures of 0.1 to 1.0 atma and temperatures of 20.degree.-60.degree. C. These new compounds are useful in processes to separate hydrogen sulfide from gaseous mixtures and to prepare pure hydrogen sulfide. Complexation can be accomplished by using CuAlCl.sub.4 in the solid state, in solution or in a slurry. H.sub.2 S is recovered by subjecting the complex addition compounds to some combination of temperature and hydrogen sulfide partial pressure as to break up the complexes and to evolve the hydrogen sulfide content of the complex as a gas stream.

    Abstract: An aromatic solution of the compound CuAl(CN)Cl.sub.3 alone or with additional solid CuAl(CN)Cl.sub.3 is used for the separation of some unsaturated compound (olefin, acetylene or carbon monoxide) from a feedstream.The feedstream is contacted with the solvent to form a complex of the ligand (olefin, acetylene or carbon monoxide). The feedstream is then separated from the solvent. The solvent is then treated with some combination of heat and lowered pressure to separate the ligand from the solvent. The ligand poor solvent is then recycled to contact fresh feedstream.

    Abstract: A carbon-containing solid (such as oil shale or tar sand) is treated with air in a six-stage vertical shaft to make producer gas, oil and a pure carbon as products. The top and bottom stages of the vertical shaft are fed to pre-heat incoming solid and to scavenge sensible heat from the processed solid. One stage is a direct retort and makes a gas stream which is a mixture of producer gas and oil. Another stage is a gas producer which converts fixed carbon on the solid to carbon monoxide by reaction with air and carbon dioxide. A fifth stage preheats incoming air. The sixth stage cools and purifies hot carbon monoxide-rich producer gas.The oil and producer gas products are made by direct retorting of the solid with air followed by a separation step. The pure carbon product is made by separating pure carbon monoxide from the carbon monoxide-rich producer gas followed by reacting the carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and the pure carbon product.

Complexation can be conducted with the bimetallic salt in the solid state, in solution, or as a slurry, and with the complexible ligand in the gaseous or liquid state. The ligand is recovered by decomplexation of the bimetallic salt-ligand complex or by displacement of the complexed ligand with another ligand.
